Yesterday I gave a talk at the Voglia d’Italia society in Doncaster about what it is that is Brits love so much about Italian crime dramas. I had fun and we talked about locations, mise-en-scène, stereotypes, and teletourism.

Writing update: I now have 300 pages of notes for the Johnny Dorelli chapter, which consist mostly of screenshots & annotations of things in a Word Document. About 5,000 words on how many time he’s on TV between 1954 and 1976 and what for. The final chapter should only be 5,000 words… 😬 #AmWriting

It is time. I’ve been stuck with the variety TV book of late, for all sorts of reasons. But I am determined to get unstuck. So diving in with Chapter 11, on Johnny Dorelli, and collecting some ideas. #AmWriting

I still would like to write something about the Beatles. And something else about Morecambe and Wise and European variety television tropes of the 1950s. #TooManyIdeasTooLittleTime

All my various hats/professional identities are converging at the Education through Podcasting conference, hosted at the University of Leeds. I’m talking about the TV Italian Style podcast, alternative ways of conducting research, & exploring academic identities through finding my podcasting voice.

In Cambridge today speaking at the Notes on Work conference. My paper is on the unseen labour of bringing music and literature to the Italian small screen as evidenced in Biblioteca di Studio Uno.

Spent some time today writing 2 abstracts: a conference paper on La Biblioteca di Studio Uno and the unseen labour of bringing music & literature to the small screen & a book chapter on the reframing of Marcello Mastroianni’s star image on Italian variety TV 59-76. Excited to get writing!

So obviously the most important thing when writing a book is to procrastinate with the writing by thinking about a cover image. Option 1: this AI-generated interpretation of the prompt ‘Italian variety television 1950s, 60s, 70s’

Been having a bit of an identity wobble of late - so have had a read of Stephen Gundle’s review of The Many Meanings of Mina. Not sure I feel like the pioneer and leading expert but if Stephen says it, then it bears thinking about!
Screenshot of paragraph of text. It says,
For those with an interest in Italian culture or Italian popular entertainment and music, this book will be a very welcome addition in an area that is, perhaps surprisingly, under-researched. Given Italy's strong association with music, it might be expected that popular song would be a key sub-field of Italian cultural studies. In fact, this is not the case and Haworth is one of only a handful of scholars to have made this her specialism. Indeed, she can be regarded as the pioneer and a leading expert in the field. Even in Italy, it must be said, most serious writing about popular music is conducted outside the academy by journalists and freelance authors. The reason for this marginalisation has nothing to do with the music itself, although there are many in Italy who do not conceal their preference for American and British sounds over domestic products, and everything to do with the way some cultural forms and media acquire legitimacy as objects of study while others struggle to gain the same recognition.
