Have you listened yet? I talk about colourful fashion kings who are Real Men™️ such as Henri IV of France & Navarre and Daario Naharis, as well as soldiers and generally speaking, men, who had not been hit in the head with the 19th century “ban” on colour and used it to show who they were and status

We have a new episode out! In chocking turn of events we’re talking about gender stuff again…😅 As a part of that, we discuss masculinity norms a fair bit and how what it means to be a man has differed a lot throughout history and different cultures. And how ASOIAF does (or doesn’t) reflect that.

Since we also talk a fair bit about the character Sweets, Lo wanted to share this amazing artwork of Sweets that @sanrixian.bsky.social made for them a while back! 💜
Drawing of the character Sweets. Sweets is a feminine person with dyed purple haired lurlle eyes, purple lipstick, and a flowing purple dress. They’re also wearing moonstone jewellery.

We also discussed how historically (from Ancient Rome to medieval times to the renaissance) rulers tended to wear colourful clothing to show their status. And how the Mad King play captured that more accurately than GoT. 😅

We discuss several historical people (and groups) that might be considered trans or gender nonconforming today, from medieval England and Germany to the early modern Ottoman Empire.

I think this is it for now! This was primarily Lo’s notes, Virginie will add hers later!

DM also mentioned that a big theme in the play is ”the heart in conflict with itself”. Vows being tested. Love versus duty.
130
Ragman’s Harbour Podcast @ragmanspod.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
Another sort of Shakespearean influence is that the scenes aren’t numbered. They just flow from each other/into each other. Similarly, Shakespeare’s plays didn’t have numbered scenes in the beginning.
130
Ragman’s Harbour Podcast @ragmanspod.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
Other inspirations for DM was King Lear (as a comparison to the Mad King) and Romeo and Juliet. He also mentioned Hamlet as an inspiration for Rhaegar, with existential struggle.
130
Ragman’s Harbour Podcast @ragmanspod.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
They also got a question about if they had talked to GRRM about inspiration from Shakespeare in general and on this play in particular. DM mentioned MacBeth as inspiration in regards of prophecy, and the fickle nature of prophecy.
130
Ragman’s Harbour Podcast @ragmanspod.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
They wouldn’t say spoilers in general, but one thing revealed sort of off hand by DM that I think is a bit of a reveal: The song Rhaegar plays at the opening feast of the Tourney at Harrenhal is ”The Song of Ice and Fire”.
140
Ragman’s Harbour Podcast @ragmanspod.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
They got a question about how much of the ”reveals” in the play are canon/from GRRM and how much are their inventions DM said that some things were from GRRM and some was their inventions - mentioned the portrayal of Rhaegar and Lyanna’s relationship as one such mix.
130
Ragman’s Harbour Podcast @ragmanspod.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
Fun Easter egg mentioned by CL: The Harrenhal weirdwood shows up in the play, and it has 13 slashes.

Ragman’s Harbour Podcast @ragmanspod.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
When creating puppets in general they look a lot at anatomy of the animals (or humans) in question. There was a lot of collaboration on materials in props/background/puppetry!
120
Ragman’s Harbour Podcast @ragmanspod.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
One thing mentioned by FC and DM was that when workshopping they figured out that they could have characters in battle scenes being sort of knocked out of their armour, so they’re out of their body looking at themselves while everything is in slow-motion. They then added that to the script.
120
Ragman’s Harbour Podcast @ragmanspod.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
They made use of human life size puppets. How do you make puppets that feel real? That feel like they could harm you?
120
Ragman’s Harbour Podcast @ragmanspod.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
FC has been involved in the show for about 2.5 years. He mentioned that lot of the puppetry show was created with the help of R&D. One of their challenges was how to make not literal violence in the battles.
120
Ragman’s Harbour Podcast @ragmanspod.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
They did a lot of work to get the pageantry and heraldry right. Translating that to banners, armour, and even furniture. Another perk of theatre: you can have costumes and props be colourful and loud without it seeming silly. It doesn’t have to be as grey as it sometimes is on tv.
130
Ragman’s Harbour Podcast @ragmanspod.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
The audience also plays a role in the play. We’re audiences during the tourney, or we’re eavesdropping on private conversations.
130
Ragman’s Harbour Podcast @ragmanspod.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
You can also have characters talk in a more elevated way of speech, speaking to their scene partner but also to the world as a whole. Like doing speeches that are both dialogue and thesis statements about themes.
