The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service produces global forecasts of atmospheric composition, including ozone concentration. It found that recent heatwaves saw concentrations as high as 180μg/m3. A typical European summer ozone concentration is 40-60μg/m3. ➡️ www.ecmwf.int/en/about/med...

2026 has been an active year for wildfires in the Arctic Circle with total estimated emissions, to 17 Aug, already 3rd highest since 2003, behind 2020 & 2019, despite starting later than usual in late July. #CopernicusAtmosphere GFASv1.2 data based on MODIS🛰️ @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social @ecmwf.int

Open source tools can help track every stage of a wildfire, from the first reports through to assessing the damage once the flames are out. Throughout July, the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service helped researchers monitor how wildfire smoke spread across Canada and the US.

Thanks to the rapidly developing major El Niño event, global surface air and sea surface temperatures are approaching new record values. Typically it is the year following the event that yields new global temperature record, but it's possible we could see this year.
