A key component of the Cambridge Analytica outrage was your friends subjecting you to data theft without your consent or knowledge. Facebook is running the same playbook on your text messages. Even if you’re not on Meta properties, they’re ingesting your interactions.
Aten installed Muse on both his iPhone and a Mac mini that he uses to test out various Al agents and tech. It took Meta a single day to begin "helpfully" pitching article ideas based on texts he'd sent to a podcast co-host.
When he asked Muse how it got the information, it said that it read banners from incoming texts. But that's not true, either.
After doing a little digging, Aten says Muse synced 187,000 lines from his Messages database, despite Full Disk Access being Off.Unless Aten is the most popular person on the face of the planet, I sincerely doubt he'd gotten 187,000 lines of text in roughly 24 hours. What happened is that, without permission, Muse went into the app and downloaded the information.
He had not given Muse permission to access Messages, and full disk access was not enabled. It just went ahead and uploaded those texts anyway.
Muse can take "unexpected actions" indeed.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

I'd like to remind everyone of the principled courage of the Pentagon press, which walked out of the building their beat relies on rather than sign a loyalty oath. One of them was a dear friend for whom it was a giant sacrifice and I'm so proud of him. The White House press isn't in the same league.

Stop calling this a DC makeover. This is an illegal desecration of our capital and a huge waste of American families’ money. DC is sacred ground, and we shouldn’t minimize the real damage being done.

This piece by Colson Whitehead is one of my favorite things ever written. I've shared it many times with folks over the years. It was published two months after 9/11, and I believe it's one of the greatest things ever put to pen about grief, memory, and time. www.nytimes.com/2001/11/11/m...
I started building my New York on the uptown No. 1 train. My first city memory is of looking out a subway window as the train erupted from the tunnel on the way to 125th Street and palsied up onto the elevated tracks. It's the early 70's, so everything is filthy. Which means everything is still filthy, because that is my city and I'm sticking to it. I still call it the Pan Am Building, not out of affectation, but because that's what it is. For that new transplant from Des Moines, who is starting her first week of work at a Park Avenue South insurance firm, that colossus squatting over Grand Central is the Met Life Building, and for her it always will be. She is wrong, of course -- when I look up there, I clearly see the gigantic letters spelling out Pan Am, don't I? And of course I am wrong, in the eyes of the old-timers who maintain the myth that there was a time before Pan Am.

People whinging about NYC's Muslim mayor have it backwards:
2-frame screen shot from the daily show. First frame shows the lights in the sky representing the twin towers, and the second shows Mayor Mamdani. Captions read: "The idea that 9/11 is about 'Muslims vs America" isn't just wrong, it's accepting Osama Bin Laden's vision of the world. And the fact that 25 years later after 9/11, we have a New-York grown, Muslim mayor leading our remembrance, proves to the world that Al Qaeda didn't win; New York won."

Oh my Christ, there is no droit du sol in France. All the paperwork I had to do for my kids, both born in France, to become French put me off requesting the nationality for myself. The US has droit du sol, Ireland had it before 2005. Born there and you’re that nationality. Not in France.
