Seagulls will gladly steal people’s food at the beach, but they are also highly skilled at hunting crabs.

A Forster's Tern flying in loops over the beach at Fire Island, shouting nonstop about how it just caught a fish. Non. Stop. Five minutes of shouting about catching a fish. Just sit down and eat already! LOL

The Long Island Museum at Stony Brook is AMAZING! 🤩 Their history exhibits are fantastic and I love what they’re doing with art exhibits. Definitely worth visiting!

Jahana Hayes launched her 2026 campaign this morning in Waterbury to rousing cheers of support. Yay!!! She’s been in office for almost eight years and is still going strong, still working hard to do right by the people of Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District.

Slogging my way through Revolutionary War muster rolls, piecing together a story about CT’s 6th Regiment in the weeks and months following the mutiny of May 26, 1780.

In 1779, Revolutionary War hero General Israel Putnam escaped the British by riding his horse down a long flight of stairs on a steep hill. The moment was later depicted by Anna Hyatt Huntington in this twisting, turning sculpture in Redding, CT.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned so far in 2026, it’s that “consequences,” “laws,” and “morality” no longer have any meaning. The powerful do as they please.

Why do we live in such a childish, stupid country? A country that wastes its money on useless billion dollar aircraft carriers, when it could be spending those tax dollars to actually help its citizens like sane countries.

I bought myself a treat—Volume 11 of The National Magazine, which has gorgeous images of Waterbury in 1857. I use the images pretty regularly when I talk about Waterbury history, but the images available online are poor quality scans. When I spotted this on eBay for $30, I had to buy it!

I’ve been working on the second draft of my book for 2.5 years. I thought I still had a long way to go, but I just looked at the physical first draft and now feel much more optimistic! The stack on the left is what I’ve edited and reworked. The stack on the right is what hasn’t been done yet.

Opening in 1917, the Cheshire Country Club was the first in the nation to be exclusively for Black members, who were otherwise excluded from white-only country clubs.

Sometimes you just have to get a little treat for yourself. I refer to this book all the time as I work on writing my book, so I figured it would be nice to have my own copy. Originally published in 1878, this is from the 1882 print run.

None of that is what feminism told women. That’s what capitalism tells everyone. Feminism told women they are equal to men and that a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.

Last night as I lay squished into an MRI tube, I thought about the book I’m writing and how I need to learn more about Black Americans in Haiti during the 1860s. And then, when I got home and opened up Facebook, I saw a post by historian Ana Lucia Araujo that included a book just like that!

I say this as someone who has studied interior design of the 1800s, although it holds true in many other ways. Trump is an idiot. Lincoln era bathrooms never had marble all over the walls. They had woodwork. Everywhere. Places we would never put woodwork. Never slabs of marble.
Stupid man boasts about a very stupid thing he has done. An actual Lincoln era bathroom, sheathed in wood.

CIA-sponsored regime change has a tendency to be horrific, but apparently we’re doing it again. Is it Venezuela’s oil that we’re after, or is there something else our oligarchs want?

Today I indulged in writing for 8 hours. Which means 8 hours of intense hyperfocus at the keyboard. My body is not happy! Maybe it’s okay that I normally get only 4-5 hour blocks of writing on weekends. I think it’s better for my health.
