The power of this poem is that it inhabits a world within our world. It reflects a side of capitalism that remains literally in the dark. As we trace our way through the night-shift labor landscape through the retail aisles: We stock product. We throw freight. We clean the store. No one knows our names And we barely know each other. United by the appearance of a frog, an interloper into the sacral artifice of the store. And it is killed. The closing lines collapse the boundary between shift work and time itself, leaving the workers bound to a cycle where nature is foreign and escape remains perpetually delayed into a hypothetical future and a forgotten past.
