As part of @naturalengland.bsky.social Species Recovery Programme, @savebutterflies.bsky.social are assessing planted Barberry to evaluate planting success & target management for Barberry Carpet moth. Drought likely impacted numbers, so we were excited to see this larva in Wiltshire! #WildAgain

Nice to get out in the field with some @savebutterflies.bsky.social colleagues in Dorset on Tues - mapping Marsh Fritillary caterpillar webs, taking part in #BigButterflyCount & moth trapping. A very fresh Small Elephant Hawk-moth was surprising in early Aug. #teammoth @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social

Marsh Fritillary larvae munching their way rapidly through Devil's-Bit Scabious in Dorset. Late July seems the norm now for annual web counts here. Web numbers seem ok, but Devil's-bit Scabious is struggling with the drought on some sites.

Sandhill Rustic (Luperina nickerlii ssp Leechi) is known from one site & is highly vulnerable to climate impacts. @savebutterflies.bsky.social @naturalengland.bsky.social funded Species Recovery Project aims to reduce its vulnerability with opportunities to get involved on this exciting project!

Tough choice voting in @savebutterflies.bsky.social Britain's Favourite Butterfly. The Peacock, which sparks childhood memories of busy buddleia? The stunning Marsh Fritillary, which hooked me into butterflies? Lulworth Skipper edged it, find out why here: butterfly-conservation.org/news-and-blo...

Good photos, I saw a lot of feeding damage at a chalk site near Sutton Poyntz yesterday, it is another early site, I'd suspect adults to certainly be flying there before the end of May.

Habitat management interventions for a specialist mid- successional grassland butterfly, the Lulworth Skipper - Journal of Insect Conservation
Evidence-based management is needed to reverse declines in insect abundance. The Lulworth Skipper Thymelicus acteon is a range-restricted and declining species in the UK and northern Europe associated...

Results support the use of low intensity or frequency management for Lulworth Skipper, and show that cutting or rotovation management could be helpful management tools when managing for this mid-successional species, particularly on sites where grazing is tricky.

Monitoring over four years showed recovery of the habitat was faster on cut plots, but larval occupancy recovered more rapidly on rotovated plots, where plant species diversity was also higher.

Using rotovation and cutting management, we investigated their effects on the height and structure of vegetation containing Tor-grass, the larval host plant for Lulworth Skipper.
