> [I work on Claude Code] I broadly agree with the author’s point: plan mode was useful, and is no longer useful.
In Claude Code, all plan mode does is add a little reminder to every user message along the lines of “you’re in plan mode, please don’t code yet”. It’s something I came up with late on a Sunday night many months ago, when I got tired of asking Claude to plan with me first before coding in each new session. Something people might not realize is plan mode has always been a prompt — it has never changed the toolset because doing so would break the prompt cache, and so would be expensive for users.

This worked well for a while, until a few months ago, using early versions of Fable, I realized that I wasn’t using plan mode anymore because the model just got it, and because for the increasingly complex work I asked the model to do, planning had become interactive and iterative. With Opus 5.5, I feel Opus has gotten to that point too.

For codebase understanding, I sometimes ask Claude to generate an artifact that explains some aspect of its changes. For complex diffs to core parts of the system, I will often ask it to make diagrams or even interactive demos so I can better understand the change and alternatives considered. I don’t do this very often, but it’s a useful way to explain code when you need it. I ask Claude to attach these artifacts to its PRs also, so others can understand and future Claudes have the context.

it made a surprisingly big difference in terms of comfort at least enough that i was ok-ish sleeping with it on, unlike the 8 i eventually just picked up a fitbit air, though i was experimenting with using it as a nato strap, although the comfort wasn’t great given my wrist size

So why didn’t I sign the letter? Let me extract a couple of sentences from it that express what I see as the principal argument being put forward.

> But solving problems is only a tool and proxy for achieving the primary goal of conceptual understanding and insight. Forgetting this in the world of AI may turn the tool against the primary goal. Indeed, the mass production at faster and faster pace of “true/false” statements could destroy fertile ground instead of breathing life into new ideas.

Perhaps the main reason I didn’t sign is that I don’t fully subscribe to this view. Instead, I have a more complicated view, which I actually expressed in my essay The Two Cultures of Mathematics a quarter of a century ago, and which can be summarized by saying that there is a spectrum of attitudes in mathematics to the relationship between problem-solving and conceptual understanding. At one end of the spectrum you have mathematicians who are primarily motivated by the wish to solve problems, who see conceptual understanding as a very important means to that end. At the other you have mathematicians who are primarily motivated by the wish to attain conceptual understanding, who see problem-solving as a very important means to that end. I worry that the severe-misalignment letter could be seen as saying that the “right” attitude is to focus on conceptual understanding as the main priority — indeed, the above sentences say that more or less directly. But I think that there are mathematicians all across the spectrum, and that that is a good thing (or perhaps I should say that it has been a good thing up to now — the future is much less certain), and I don’t want to suggest to a large fraction of mathematicians, including myself, that their mathematical temperament is somehow “wrong”.

bizarro through the looking glass version of "ML is just a fancy linear regression" where instead of modeling your input data, you only model your questions and apply it to unstructured input addition of these constraints means it is not the same sort of thing but it is interesting
