Rachael "Syril's Beret" @rachael1918.bsky.social · 01/10/2026To walk the streets of Pompeii is to experience a kind of time travel - while the town is often associated with death & destruction, it's full of signs of life. The use of plants and trees is really genius in how it gives a sense of what it must have been like to experience Pompeii 2,000 years ago. 1182

Rachael "Syril's Beret" @rachael1918.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I was thrilled to come across this fabulous statue of Lord Byron in Rome today. The two American tourists who innocently asked me who he was (!) were somewhat less thrilled when I gave them a characteristically chaotic Byron infodump. 1111
Rachael "Syril's Beret" @rachael1918.bsky.social · 27/09/2026I've had an exhausting but amazing first day in Rome! I started the day off being gently scolded by a nun for straying on to the wrong floor (I'm staying in a convent), toured the Domus Aurea (Nero's Golden Palace), got lost on the Appia Antica and ended up at the Capitoline Museum. Magnificent! 2202

Rachael "Syril's Beret" @rachael1918.bsky.social · 18/09/2026This is very much a me problem rather than any fault of either the book or the film, but I can't bring myself to watch the movie of THE LOVE HYPOTHESIS. My history with Reylo lore runs too deep. The Tom Bateman of it all is too cringe. The second-hand embarrassment is simply too intense. 380

Rachael "Syril's Beret" @rachael1918.bsky.social · 16/09/2026THE FALL OF KYLO REN #2 is a mixed bag - on the plus side, it improves on Kylo's characterisation by correctly identifying that thinking about Rey is his default setting. On the negative, it insists on reminding the reader of the Kylo/Tava kiss and is mostly concerned with fighting a stupid robot. 1120
Rachael "Syril's Beret" @rachael1918.bsky.social · 16/09/2026I have finally read THE FALL OF KYLO REN #1 and it's pretty meh tbh - mostly concerned with Hux and Pryde squabbling over military tactics, with a garnish of Kylo Ren taking a rare interest in actually leading the First Order. The space scenes look great but the likenesses are a real mixed bag. 2150

Rachael "Syril's Beret" @rachael1918.bsky.social · 09/09/2026I really loved THE INCOMER w/ Domhnall Gleeson and Gayle Rankin - it's a really sweet fable focused on two siblings who have never left their remote Scottish island, and the newcomer (Gleeson) who disturbs their equilibrium. It's a deeply eccentric film that makes great use of local folklore. 090
