Thrilled that the audiobook of #WildforAusten (out Sept. 2nd) will be narrated by award-winning Marisa Calin! Calin's voice is enchanting & mellifluous, with just the right amount of humor & sass. Grateful this #JaneAusten book has such a perfect-fit narrator.

I’m assigning this to my Austen seminar for lots of reason including Devoney’s work on Austen and abolition. It’s also a wonderful model for how to write TO the public about cultural history and archival research.
Advance copy of Wild for Austen. Purple and pink book out September, 2026.

On 9 May 1814, Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park was published. The novel plays an important role in our Austen and Turner exhibition @harewoodhouse where we place it in conversation with abolitionist works by Olaudah Equiano and William Cowper and Turner’s Slave Ship. #austenandturner

New editions of her novels are aimed squarely at the BookTok demographic – but will this make these classics appeal to fans of “spicy” romance?

If you’re the kind of person who easily forgets what you’ve accomplished, you need a practice for reminding yourself. Count the years, the finished projects, the progress, the praise, count it all up and use it as evidence against the ever present criticism in your head that you’re not doing enough.

The kinds of materials include printed texts, manuscripts, a red book (shhhhh that figures largely in the Introduction!), a watercolor family record, Fraktur, gravestone, and a sampler. [Individual Highlight – Doctoress] Cuba Cornwallis, Port Royal, Jamaica.
-----
After posting the entry for Miss T-m-s on the 13th October, I was introduced to the amazing Cuba Cornwallis in my comments. I promised myself that once I set up a space for special characters or highlights of certain individuals, I would honour her by including her. She’s been on my mind a lot recently, and even though she is not one of my ladies, I think she is worth remembering. Like many women of the age, and even more so as a black woman who was previously enslaved, there is precious little about her life that is not linked to the white men who interacted with her. What we can see, however, is how incredible and intelligent she was. I would hope, in future, that she is remembered on par with Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale.

William Cornwallis - Daniel Gardner (1780), Admiral Lord Viscount Nelson - John Hoppner (1839)
About Her: Cuba Cornwallis: Doctoress: Her name has various spellings, but most common iterations seem to be either Cuba (from Horatio Nelson’s own writings) or Cubah. Her surname comes from Captain William Cornwallis of whom she was originally enslaved to. When, how, and why she was released from slavery is not known, but she remained a housekeeper in Cornwallis’ residence until he left for England. She then moved to Port Royal, becoming a nurse and doctor to the sailors of the Royal Navy. She turned her home into a combination rest station and hospital for all who needed her services as both a nurse and doctor. While in Port Royal, she utilised her knowledge in folk medicine, strict enforcement of hygiene and her positive and motherly bedside manner to heal many throughout her long career: from her earlier patient (Nelson) in 1780 until her death in 1848.Her Surroundings: Her Patients: After moving to Port Royal, Cuba became so famous for her abilities as a nurse, that when Horatio Nelson, then Captain Nelson, fell ill with dysentery, a disease which was often fatal in this period, he was brought straight to her. True to her abilities, with rest and rehydration, Nelson recovered and never forgot the kindness shown to him by Cuba. Nelson: “I wish any vessel was going from this place that I might send something to poor Cuba” - To Admiral Cornwallis Oct 28th 1784. Later, she was entrusted with treating Prince William (later William IV) during his time stationed in Jamaica. William was so impressed by her and upon informing his wife, Adelaide, she sent one of her expensive gowns to Cuba as a thank-you.

My photo can't do it justice, but @race-regency.bsky.social, if you're going to be in Vancouver soon (or Des Moines, where it's heading next), you should check out the Firelei Báez exhibition. There are many essays to be written on these works and the Regency (not least on the Brighton Pavilion)
A painting from the Firelei Báez exhibition currently on show at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Apologies, I didn't record the name of this work, but it is a portrait of a Black woman adorned with a headdress made out of white and grey fabrics, piled high on her head. She has what might be customary tattoos in red on her skin. The portrait shows her head and shoulders. Her body is side-on but she has her face turned to the viewer.
