Chapter 5. 𝐂𝐨𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 tells the story of how finance capital turns coworking into a new asset class (including the boom and bust of WeWork around its failed IPO in 2019).

Chapter 4. 𝐀𝐢𝐫𝐛𝐧𝐛’𝐬 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐧 is based on field research with Airbnb hosts in Berlin and discusses how the labour of turning homes into assets is organised.

Chapter 3. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦 introduces the argument that the conjuncture following the 2007-08 financial crisis is marked by a convergence between technology and property speculation. It also provides a history of urban speculation in Berlin since 1989.

Rabea Berfelde @rabeaber.bsky.social · 07/10/2026

Chapter 2. 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐈𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐭-𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 engages with the post-operaist theoretisation of labour and finance in the post-Fordist conjuncture — a discourse that I engage with critically through the more empirical discussion in the book’s other chapters.

Chapter 1. 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐬 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 foregrounds a spatial theory perspective for the analysis of financialised urbanism. It engages with Henri Lefebvre’s seminal work on spatial production.

Spaces of Urban Platformisation⁣ investigates how financialisation and platform capitalism shape urban everyday life. It looks at the speculative operations around Airbnb and coworking in Berlin. The book has been out since May ’26, but it is never too late to promote it a little bit.
