I used the term Veblen good in a post yesterday and on reflection realized that I may be thinking of something different. I know a Veblen good's demand increases as price increases. Luxury good. ...other than an @Apple product, the ultimate overmarketed #Veblen goods, and I say this as a former enthusiast who realized that they're just a marketing company. I just spent about $460 on a Lenovo notebook perfect for my needs and prob about the same functional performance as a low-end MacBook

Since becoming aware of my desire to climb Maslow's pyramid, I've perceived its effects in SF, Thailand, and now Nepal. It seems challenging to self-actualize (let alone "transcend") when life (of many I've met, including me at times) seems dependent on the next dollar, baht, or rupee.

As a white guy living in Asia for going on 6 months, I'm beginning to see what being singled out by race means. Not necessarily "bad" but walking through the streets of Nepal, for example, does attract attention, whether posing with a youth football team or acknowledging frequent requests for money.
