and of course, as @flyingrodent.bsky.social and others always say, the Fearless Media could stop it all straight away if they wanted to. just half a dozen standing outside the Home Office shouting "are you going to resign for being so utterly ridiculous" at ministers would do it.

this morning's commute was somewhat marred by the appearance of the paramilitary wing of London Northwestern at the exit barrier. I don't think there were any passengers in the meeting where they decided that the best approach to "revenue protection" was a Berlin Wall Reenactment Society.

to add to your sample size of people saying the same thing, it was definitely included in the early 1980s. this could be the basis for a scone-style regional differences controversy.

recent experience: these people (and their industry colleagues and tame law firms) will sometimes persist right up until a month before the court date when they realise you actually intend to turn up and have a chat with them and a judge.

Waiting for Burnham to say "We appreciate that some people may wish to slash at RNLI boats with what appears to be an illegal bladed article while shouting abuse and we hear their concerns". Take one step towards fascists, they take three steps back & say 'meet me halfway'. No pasáran.

How can it be that I know Andy Burnham disapproves of serving Yorkshire puddings with Christmas dinner but not whether he disapproves of masked fascists threatening members of the RNLI?

observation: quite a lot of "things that happen at work" at the moment is people trying to sell each other stuff they've built in Claude. the problem is that they all recognise the output cos it all looks the same. so then they all think "well I could do that myself". maybe this is circular economy.

When I was younger, I'd look at nations that had collapsed into fascism and wonder two things: how could so many people involve themselves in such cruelty and why didn't politicians do more to stop them? The last decade has shown how the first bit happened and now we're getting to the second part.

When I was at school, learning about the "history" of European racism, I didn't get much of a notion that at some point I would have to physically stand up for my family, friends and neighbours against a masked, potentially violent mob. And now it could be this weekend for all I know.

I wonder what event is going to lead politicians to the realisation that these things need to be stopped? it feels like the answer might be too close for comfort to "the Russians closing in on Berlin".

this is also true in the UK. and I speak as someone who desperately wants this shit not to happen, but am also, if not apathetic, certainly over-concerned about self-protection.

There is no electoral downside to the Government calling fascist thugs fascist thugs and it is absolutely insane that Starmer-but-Northern doesn't recognise this.

I simply do not understand what's going on in Labour that renders its leaders incapable of finding a TV camera and speaking out against street violence. Even if you assume they agree about immigration, violence is wrong, unpopular AND against the interests of any even vaguely left wing govt.

The National Front migration policies didn’t stop when Starmer quit BTW. The same people are still in post doing just the same things. All that’s happened is: they’ve recognised the overt Norsefire rhetoric and imagery repels the libs, so they’ve hidden it beneath a thin veneer of smiley good vibes.

footballfan (n): a subspecies of the genus homo sapiens which sees no humour in the fact that it will scream abuse both at an opposition player for taking a free kick 3 yards from the correct location, and at the referee for asking its own player to take it from the right place.

For non-Brits: if you understand Britain as less of a modern democracy and more as creepy village in the woods ruled by a clique of malicious elders who periodically sacrifice a bunch of their children to their pagan gods to improve the harvest, then this stuff makes *a lot* more sense.
