Much as I love my [autistic] child, I sometimes need to scream. She worries. And worries. And worries. And worries. And worries. And worries. And worries. And begins again for the next minute. And the next. And the next...

I did this very simple recipe yesterday. Very tasty! Would Recommend Ingredients 1 cup full-fat plain Greek yogurt 1/2 cup tahini 1/4 cup freshly-squeezed lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt Directions whisk together the yogurt sauce ingredients until combined gimmesomeoven.com/greek-meatballs
A white plate holding, layered, a tortilla, a circle of sliced meat and dollop of yoghurt and tahini sauce, the latter spread into a circle with the back of a spoon.

Was it lazy to answer the question "is it raining?” by opening the weather radar app on my phone instead of standing up, walking to the window, opening the curtains and peering into the darkness?

So. I Google 'The bartender rips off your arm' to find the full Star Trek/Lower Decks quote: "The bartender rips your arm off and kills you with it! It is not an honorable death since, technically, you have died by your own hand." Google cannot be too careful, so its first reply is instructions;
the bar tender rips off your arm

A severed arm is a life-threatening medical emergency that requires calling for emergency services immediately.

Emergency Steps

Call 999 right away to get an ambulance.

Press hard on the bleeding wound with a clean cloth or bandage.

Keep pressure on the wound until help arrives.

Wrap the detached arm in a clean, damp cloth and put it inside a sealed plastic bag.

Place the bag on ice, but do not let the arm freeze or touch ice directly.

Is this a joke, part of a story, or a real emergency?

#GENX – WE know where the pencil goes. I was wondering what sort of image encapsulated GenX. There are many, many ideas: drinking from a garden hose (I never did that), heading home when the streetlights came on (I never had that), being a latchkey kid (I wasn't one), but a pencil in a mix tape?😀👍
Alt text: Stylised close-up of a yellow pencil inserted through a cassette-tape reel, beside the handwritten title, “GEN X — We Know Where the Pencil Goes.”

The Silence of the Lambs, 1988 It's suddenly so dated. Not the story, as such, but the detail – a Rolodex. A car with a phone built in. The lack of DNA analysis. All those little things that we use our phones for now, including as torches (that's a lesser thing, but still a thing). Simpler times😄

Yeah, really.
Five pictures of statues and one picture of a picture of Hercules fighting the Nemean Lion – the first labour of twelve set for the Greek hero by King Eurystheus¹.
Because the lion's golden fur could not be pierced by mortal weapons, Hercules used his bare hands to strangle the beast to death, later using the lion's own claws to skin it for a protective cloak, the little bugger.

¹ a man who didn't make friends easily, if I am any judge.

I found this image of a 14th-15th century hinge in the 'dictionary of French architecture from the 11th to the 16th century Vol 8' — Viollet-le-Duc, and thought it would be cool to reproduce in #Blender Fascinating book and we can now get it translated on the page fr.wikisource.org/wiki/Page:Vi...
This illustration shows an antique iron paumelle (lift-off hinge) from the late 14th or early 15th century, featuring ornate openwork plates terminating in stylized animal heads and a central barrel entwined with a snake.

Design features include pierced, decorative strap leaves (the fiches) secured with rivet nails. Terminal ends shaped like roaring animal profiles (resembling lions or panthers).A central pintle and barrel wrapped in a sculptural snake relief.

"... when the opening frames were of fairly great height (six to seven feet), the hinges were long and equipped with two spaced eyes, to prevent the warping of the wood. Figure 42 depicts one of these hinges, which appears to belong to the end of the 14th century or the beginning of the 15th. The pin is free between the eyes, as seen, and is adorned with a round iron tail coiled in a spiral around it. This tail is free as well. To unhang the frame, it is sufficient to remove this pin from above...".

This image comes from Dictionnaire raisonné de l’architecture française du XIe au XVIe siècle (The Dictionary of French Architecture from 11th to 16th Century) (1856) by Eugène Viollet-le-DucFront-facing CGI render, created in Blender, of an ornate 14th- to 15th-century iron butt hinge mounted on a blue canvas surface. Its symmetrical, rough-textured leaves feature decorative openwork, curved edges and rows of round-headed rivets. A central hinge pin has pointed finials and a raised spiral detail.

Architectural drawing with Russian annotations showing the front elevation and cross-section of a tall, round-arched stone doorway. Dimensions, masonry joints, wooden double doors, an iron ring handle, moulding profiles and scale bars are marked in feet and inches.Computer-generated reconstruction of a tall, round-arched doorway set into a weathered ochre plaster wall. Dark wooden double doors, slightly parted at the centre, are surrounded by a pale moulded stone frame. Strong sunlight casts a large diagonal shadow across the wall and cobbled ground.

Dammmmnnn! Not only do I have a Discworld book I don't remember ever buying, but it has rules to Cripple Mr Onion compiled by Andrew C. Millard and printed out in 1996 –I think it was on a Wednesday.
A picture of the cover of Terry Pratchett's 'the last hero' with a sheaf of paper sticking out of the top showing the rules for cripple Mr onion.
In the background are a heap of cardboard boxes, as befits a storage room.

The pleasure at seeing my 'talk like a Terry Pratchett Igor'* request to #chatgpt be fulfilled by the phrase: "The Moon Iſ a Harſh Miſtreſſ"* *that "ſ" is a 'long s' character, that looks to us like an 'f', resulting in comments by Stan Freberg about "the purfuit of happineff".
"The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress" displayed in Hoyer Script.

"Hoyer Script™ is a fresh redesign of Hans Hoyer’s Schoenschrift, a slender vintage italic with a calligraphic touch. This font should be used like my blackletter fonts. It means that the s-key is occupied by the long s, and the round s lies on the #-key. By typing N, o, and period plus activating Ordinals feature you will get an old-style number sign.

#Kiwi proper boot polish you can tell by the smell I dunno. Best boot polish ever, it's been going on my boots and shoes for the best part of 6 decades (thanks for covering the early years, dad) and now I have to pay 'Armando Legg' to get the stuff, because they don't sell it in the UK anymore. 🤬
A right boot with a nitrile-gloved thumb rubbing on boot polish. Next to the boot on a tiled floor is an open tin of Kiwi black boot polish.
Unseen are the polishers curses, rising sulphurously into the air, directed at the manufacturer for no longer selling in his country.

On the left, a real Belle Époque flat in Antwerp. On the right, the #blender reproduction. The fireplace is in the main file, awaiting the doors – both the mullioned and the side door with the etched glass panel – to drop into place one day.
A bright, elegant dining room in a period home, viewed from one end of the room toward a sunlit sitting room beyond.
On the left is a large pale stone fireplace with carved geometric decoration around the opening. Above it is a dark green-black inset panel, etched or painted with an elaborate urn-and-flower design. The mantel holds candles, books, small framed artwork, and a brass-toned decorative sphere. A wicker peacock chair sits in front of the fireplace, with books resting on its seat.
The walls, ceiling, doors, and mouldings are painted white, giving the room a very airy, high-ceilinged feel. Tall white-framed glazed double doors stand open ahead, their panes divided into decorative rectangular and arched shapes.
On the right, a long rectangular dining table with a pale blue-green top fills the foreground. It has mismatched wooden chairs around it and a large white textured pot containing a leafy green plant at its centre. Near the nearer corner are a tray, a gold-coloured cylinder, and a glossy black decorative object.
Beyond the open glass doors, daylight pours into a softer, mostly white sitting room, where a pale sofa and a striped chair can just be seenThe same long, elegant room is now empty of furniture and seen at night. The pale walls, tall doorways and decorative mouldings are still there, but most of the room has fallen into warm brown shadow.
At the far end, the glazed double doors are closed. Their white-painted frames form a neat geometric pattern of small rectangular panes and tall rounded central motifs. Light from the room beyond shines through the glass, a subdued amber glow that catches the patterned divisions and hints at pale shapes on the other side without clearly revealing them.
To the left, an open doorway leads into a brighter adjoining space, throwing a vertical strip of pale light across the doorway’s raised wall panels. A glazed panel beside it reflects a faint version of that light.
The empty floor is dark and unobstructed, making the room feel wider, quieter and more expectant than in daylight. It has the atmosphere of a house after everyone has gone to bed: familiar architecture, but transformed by darkness and the light leaking in from elsewhere.
