Our Lady of Holy Slaughter by S. J. Shank, bleak, brutal medieval folk horror. Stranded in a swamp during the Northern Crusades, crusaders face pagan warriors—and something stranger. Atmospheric, creepy, wonderfully miserable, great characters and unsettling supernatural elements.

Crone by Keith Rosson is a bleak, atmospheric blend of crime noir and folk horror. A missing daughter, brutal murder, and sinister forces in the woods fuel a deeply unsettling mystery. Grim, eerie, and emotionally powerful—perfect for lovers of dread-soaked horror. @blackcrowbooks.bsky.social

Fracassi knows exactly how to make me uncomfortable. 🖤 Traps and Specters is a seriously creepy collection full of dread, grief, obsession and psychological nastiness. The Servitor was the standout—atmospheric, tense and deeply unsettling. Definitely one that’ll stick with me.

Cyberpunk, assassins & plenty of twists! Scion by James Islington is fast-paced, action-packed and full of great ideas. I loved the atmosphere and premise, and connected deeply with the characters. I’ll definitely read the sequel! @netgalley.bsky.social @orionbooks.bsky.social

Strange but so beautiful. 🥹 Under Story by Chloe Benjamin explores grief, time, consciousness and connection. The science-heavy first half took patience, but once it clicked, I was hooked. Weird, sad and beautiful. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. @headlinebooks.bsky.social @netgalley.bsky.social

The Dungeon by Gareth Hanrahan completely won me over! I loved Bait and her wonderfully unconventional family of goblins, a minotaur, a talking skull even a corridor slime. Funny, heartfelt, clever, a brilliant twist on the usual fantasy perspective. Highly recommended! @mytholder.bsky.social

The Infinite State is an ambitious, character-driven sci-fi novel packed with political intrigue, excellent world-building, and themes of power, surveillance, and freedom. It’s a measured rather than action-heavy read, the payoff is worth it. @netgalley.bsky.social @richardswanauthor.bsky.social

Home Sick is an atmospheric, slow-burn psychological horror with folk-horror elements. Rhiannon Grist builds creeping dread through isolation, ambiguity, and a flawed protagonist. A compelling read for fans of unsettling, uncertainty-driven horror. @netgalley.bsky.social the publisher for the ARC.

A chilling mystery set in Renaissance Florence. Snow, secrets and murder create relentless tension as Cesare Aldo investigates a killer while confronting his past. Atmospheric, gripping and beautifully written—historical crime at its finest. #NetGalley @panmacmillan.bsky.social @dvbishop.com

M. R. Carey’s The Tinder Box is a dark, inventive retelling of Andersen’s fairy tale, exploring power, temptation, and redemption. With complex characters, rich world-building, and a fresh twist on magic and demons, it’s a compelling fantasy read.@netgalley

I really enjoyed After the Fall by Edward Ashton. A clever mix of sci-fi, survival, and dark humour with great character dynamics. John, a human pet to a Grey, gets pulled into a wild adventure after a risky business deal goes wrong. Smart, funny, and thought-provoking.

Alan Moore’s I Hear A New World is a haunting, immersive dark fantasy set in late-1950s London. Blending occult chaos, surreal imagery, mythic beings, political unrest, Moore crafts a hypnotic story where reality, fantasy constantly blur. Richly layered, unsettling, deeply human.

Book Review of Red Winter by Cameron SullivNetGalleylPan Macmillanillan. Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)Red Winter is the kind of book that lures you in with atmosphere, then emotionally body-slams you with its character dynamics. We follow Sebastian, who willingly shares his body with a demon named Sarmodel, and yes, that premise is as good as it sounds. Through Sebastian’s recounting of his and Antoine’s story, we unravel the events of the Red Winter and the hunt for the Beast terrorising Antoine’s village. There’s an undercurrent of dread woven through the narration, a constant sense that something tragic is circling just out of sight. The world-building is expansive. The magic system is thoughtfully constructed and genuinely fascinating. The setting feels cold, harsh, and lived-in. I could go on about the scope of the world Sullivan created. For me, the characters are the reason this book works so well.Sebastian and Sarmodel are an elite duo. Sebastian is driven by their shared need to feed on spiritual energy, and the narration is so deeply human and vulnerable. Sarmodel, who is very much not human, somehow manages to be full of devotion and love for him. Their dynamic is chaotic, sharp, and genuinely hilarious at times… and then, out of nowhere, it becomes tender.Beyond them, the cast is morally grey, layered, and complicated. Loyalties shift, motives clash, and every choice feels heavy with consequence. The relationships, especially the tension and longing that thread through Sebastian and Antoine’s story, carry a quiet intensity that builds and builds. The pacing starts measured, but once the threads begin tightening, it’s hard to look away. By the final stretch, I was fully invested. Overall, Red Winter is atmospheric, intimate, and tragic in a way that lingers. If you love morally complex characters, demon-human bonds that are equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, and stories soaked in foreboding, this one is absolutely worth your time.Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Image: A bedroom at night, a face is lit up by the glow of a phone screen displaying cat memes. On the book-cluttered bedside table, three books look on angrily. The lead book waves a large knife and says: "Nobody needs to get hurt... Let's just put the phone down, nice and slowly..."
