Finding Franco-Americans in Indiana
From Notre Dame, Indiana, to Notre-Dame-des-Bois, the Verriers exemplified the dispersal of Canadians from the mid-nineteenth century on.

Quebec as the most progressive jurisdiction in North America? Maybe not. Maybe there is some comfort in the fact that we won't be led into a referendum during a minority parliament—and, in a twisted way, in the fact that the PQ, after its worst defeat, has bounced back for its worst victory.

You know, the party that blamed policy problems on immigration and railed against woke culture, oh, and that other party (almost literally fueled by the oil and gas industry) that promises to fix public institutions by DOGE-ing their budgets. Duplessis would be proud.

The two cents no one asked for: It seems that what little rejoicing there is in #Quebec after yesterday's election stems from the perceived annihilation of the CAQ. ...except that it's not dead. It just split into two parties, the PQ and the PCQ. #qcpoli

Franco-American newspapers connected electoral politics and the immigrant community and shaped public opinion on tariffs.

(1/2) In yet another parallel to the Gilded Age, the tariff system elicited similar opposition on both sides of the international border in the 1880s and 1890s. One Franco-American newspaper, Benjamin Lenthier's Lowell-based National, published a powerful denunciation in 1892. It notably read:

Here's a chart of US measles cases per year since 2000. Note that 2026 is already a record, and we're barely halfway thru the year. And here's state vaccination rates. Basically, every state that's not green does not have rates high enough for herd immunity. www.cdc.gov/measles/data...
Chart shows series of waves of measles cases, with the first in 2012-25, the second in 2017-18, and the third one beginning last year and continuing to this year. Every wave is higher than its predecessor.Chart shows state vaccination rates. Typically, 95% is the standard threshold for herd immunity. Only 10 states are at that level. 13 are below 90%. The trend is bad.
