Typical British Columbia landscape. Devastating clearcuts surrounded by third-growth tree farms that have been drenched in herbicide before planting and never thinned. Completely sterilized and totally devoid of life.

Chimaphila menziesii Little prince’s pine A first for me and a slight range extension for the species. Stumbled upon it yesterday while wandering the rainforest after servicing nest boxes.

Ultra-deluxe custom-built storm-proof cedar + yew cabin in the woods by a lake. Nothing but the finest materials for violet-green swallows. Firm yet forgiving grass box spring with pillow-top mattress of fine bird feathers. They left for Central America six weeks ago. Wonder where they are today.

One of them brought a Five-Hour Energy Drink to brunch last Sunday. And they drink a lot of coffee.

Somebody scored a tub of yoghurt. I’ll have to hose off that beak for them.

Not here to brag, but my personal nest box trail includes 48 meticulously designed and painstakingly handcrafted boxes made from red-cedar and yew. After a winter of researching and observing chestnut-backed chickadee ecology, I built 13 species-specific nest boxes. Off to check first one today.

Same crow. (Note right foot on upside down.) She wants prawns so we’re getting her some prawns.

I live in the valley bottom with 15’ diameter red-cedars and spruces but spend my time in this bog forest where trees of the same age barely reach 15’ tall.

Donate $500,000 to COSEWIC and I’ll eat one of these early ’80s survival cakes on stream. Donate $1M and I’ll eat all three.

Acer palmatum Japanese maple I’m extremely fortunate to spend my work life tending old trees in beautiful gardens. This 80-year-old maple lives on an island, just metres from the cold North Pacific. It’s absolutely smothered in mosses and lichens. These pruned branches will be placed in

Same camera. Wolves and bears by night. Eagles and others by day. Bear is dealing with a case of hyperphagia, so I’m sure they’re pleased about all the salmon the wolves are catching and (mostly) leaving.
