Along the lines of 4) is navigating bureaucracy in a foreign language. I don’t know all the jargon, and I can’t read the language quickly or accurately enough to be sure I’ve got things right. But the LLM can find the info based off an English prompt, provide a source, and then I can verify it.

It is really deeply concerning that I thought “this is kinda a bop even though the AI references are a bit strange”

Like, I ask myself why I’m forking out £50 or £400 to go see live music when I could just stay at home and put on headphones. Especially for electronic music DJ sets! And the reason is because it’s an experience, I get to dance with other fans, I get to see the artists play with my own eyeballs.

It's actually in a Republican's interest to state that a race is close, leaning slightly Democrat, because that'll turn out the Republican voters to stop it.

Best stars I ever saw in my life were in southern Africa... Three photos: from Rocklands (South Africa), Mozambique, and Sossusvlei (Namibia). All just on an iPhone 13 Pro.
A sky full of stars behind a lit-up boulder in the foreground. I am no poet, so I will not attempt to describe the stars' beauty, but there's a lot of them.A sky full of stars, with the milky way prominent as a bright streak with dark patches. Trees are silhouetted on the horizon and a blurred figure is seen in the foreground.Just stars, nothing else. The milky way is again prominent, with bright clusters of stars.

So this year's Glastonbury sale has you enter your registration number to join the queue, so everyone gets exactly one spot (instead of one per device/browser) Unfortunately, that now means someone else can enter *your* number to steal your queue spot, turning this into the bougie Hunger Games 😂

I’ve not really seen it much from Marisa tbh & I thought her question in that thread was pretty reasonable. Mara was only interested in her bad faith comparison to heroin (and admitted as such!)

I think it’s just a matter of “with great power comes great responsibility”. And having a big account, sometimes you catch heat but people will have your back too. When you’re a small account, you suddenly just have a firehose of abuse pointed at you, particularly if it’s a mean quote dunk.

I’ve been told MS Copilot (likely what you were using) is really uniquely bad among mainstream AI tools. It may not change your opinion but I’ve used Claude a lot and never seen it make a mistake like that (not that it’s perfect either) I also think an AI is usually the wrong tool to use in Excel…

I actually blocked Mara Wilson in that thread because she *twice* tried to quote dunk me with personal attacks and sent a torrent of abuse my way (as in, most were just blind insults). And, quite deliberately, I wasn’t even directly engaging with her!

Again, I’m not suggesting they take 60 hours of training and pass a rigorous test. But in the UK, to ride a moped (limited to 28mph too!), you need a licence (provisional or full) and to have passed some training. It should be the same for e-mopeds. www.gov.uk/motorcycle-cbt

I do not think that most cyclists can hit 28mph on the flat. I cycle every day and I usually barely overtake the lime bikes, who are limited to 16.5mph. I’d estimate I peak at 20. Those that *can* are necessarily experienced and know what they’re doing, which acts as a filter, much like a licence.

Jared 🔶 @quantumjared.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I’m not saying you shouldn’t be able to ride your vehicle, just that it should have a licence plate, a minimum age, and a registered owner who’s taken some amount of training. It wouldn’t be safe for you to be in a bike lane doing 25mph past pedal bikes (which you don’t do, but others could)

28mph is still an e-motorbike in my view. You’re able to go much faster than anyone who isn’t an athlete. In the UK legal e-bikes are capped to 16.5mph, which is maybe a little slow, but I don’t think there’s an argument to be made for electric assistance above 20mph.

Perhaps the better comparison would’ve been nuclear power. There are downsides to it, and it may not be a necessary or helpful part of our energy mix. But if you start your argument by saying it doesn’t work? Then why should I engage with that when it’s obviously false?

The people selling it are trying to hype it up as the omni-tool, but it’s telling that e.g. OpenAI makes 70% of its business from its coding tool. That stuff works, it’s self evident that it works. It can’t write poetry, but it can write code. Yet people confidently assert that it’s useless.
110
Jared 🔶 @quantumjared.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Look, I don’t know if you’re interested in having a good faith conversation about it, but I’ve found it incredibly useful for coding. Something that might’ve taken me a day or a week can take an hour (and I can do other things in the background). That frees me up to do more physics.

Jared 🔶 @quantumjared.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
You’re all individuals! That’s why I immediately received a torrent of identical abuse parroting what she said and someone threatening to turn me into today’s “main character”. Because I had to the gall to suggest AI is actually useful for some things. She’s not engaging in good faith at all.

I think a celebrity account with 200k followers *repeatedly* trying to quote dunk on me so I get harassed (after I already detached the quote once!) is “really unhelpful”, but each to their own. Anyway, if your position is that screwdrivers don’t work, then I’m listening to someone who’s used one.

Jared 🔶 @quantumjared.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I was skeptical about their utility for doing anything other than speed up writing boring boilerplate code - via advanced autocomplete basically - for a long time! And then I got a trial subscription to Claude and realised just how useful they actually are.

Why are you spending $2000/month if you think it’s useless? Like you could literally hire an actual human being for that money.
280
Jared 🔶 @quantumjared.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
No, I think her opinion is wrong because it’s an incredibly stupid opinion. Like if someone said screwdrivers don’t work, and they admitted to never having used one but only heard from friends of friends about a time that a screwdriver slipped and cut them. And then compared them to heroin.
1230
Jared 🔶 @quantumjared.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
yeah sure that’s why I’m paying £18/month of my one money for Claude, because I tried it out and thought “wow this is useless”. It’s massively sped up how quickly (and accurately! It’s caught bugs in my handwritten code) I can code up new ideas, which leaves me more time for thinking about physics.

It really doesn’t have universal applications. But it’s very powerful in a limited set of applications. That’s the middle ground between the AI weirdos who think they’re building god, and the haters who think it’s vaporware.

Mainly, they’re really, really good at coding. And because a typical frontier model is general purpose, they can also “reason” about things incidental to coding - for example, maths and physics, which helps make sure my code is doing the right thing. They’re terrible at creative writing, of course

Practically the only ones I see that *are* following the rules are the Lime bikes. But then those are typically ridden by people without two brain cells to rub together, scrolling their phone while riding through a junction. Dodging them on my own bike is fun.

Jared 🔶 @quantumjared.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I’d be okay with just enforcing the existing bans on the vehicles that break the rules: the ones that do 30mph and are actually just unlicensed e-motorbikes, being ridden by kids without any training.
