Best stars I ever saw in my life were in southern Africa... Three photos: from Rocklands (South Africa), Mozambique, and Sossusvlei (Namibia). All just on an iPhone 13 Pro.
A sky full of stars behind a lit-up boulder in the foreground. I am no poet, so I will not attempt to describe the stars' beauty, but there's a lot of them.A sky full of stars, with the milky way prominent as a bright streak with dark patches. Trees are silhouetted on the horizon and a blurred figure is seen in the foreground.Just stars, nothing else. The milky way is again prominent, with bright clusters of stars.

How many o's in the word "bookworm"

Three. Spelled b-o-o-k-w-o-r-m, the o's are at positions 2,3, and 6.

How many g's in the word "extraordinary"

Zero. Spelled e-x-t-r-a-o-r-d-i-n-a-r-y, the word has no g's.

The Democrats aren't Labour, and if you're going to claim that, then you're going to have to explain why these two maps are in almost one-to-one correspondence. You can give Democrats the power to stop attacks on trans people. Or you can throw trans people under the bus. Your choice.

Her opinion is that it’s better if a Republican like Ken Paxton wins. That’s a pretty shitty opinion, both for trans people (in Texas and beyond) but also immigrants, women, other LGBT people, the people who had USAID withdrawn and are dying from it, etc. She should own it (and so should you).
What you do with this information is up to you. Many, myself included, have argued against voting for the worst offenders on this list even where it means a Republican takes the seat. A Republican victory costs the community one seat for one term…

TIL: one singular bus is considered Mass Transit™, but an underground metro is not.
An image of text with "Typically, Mass Transit would use one or more modern high-capacity bus, tram or tram-train type vehicle" highlighted.

Full text:
How does Mass Transit fit into our wider plans for transport in West Yorkshire?

Mass Transit will offer another way to travel in West Yorkshire that will improve choice and reliability for residents.

It will connect seamlessly with other modes—buses, rail, walking, and cycling—through the Weaver Network, creating one unified network. Typically, Mass Transit would use one or more modern high-capacity bus, tram or tram-train type vehicle.

In strengthening travel choice for residents, it can play a key role in supporting the region's economic ambitions making it easier for people to travel for work, learning and leisure. It can increase opportunities to bring forward new housing and regeneration projects, and make it easier for businesses, workers, suppliers and customers to connect. The meme of the guy pointing at the butterfly. He's labelled "West Yorkshire" and he's pointing at a bus, asking "Is this mass transit?"

No, it isn’t a defence and people should’ve gone to jail for failing to consult the no-strike list after misidentifying the hospital building, but it doesn’t make Obama a war criminal, which is what you’re arguing.

(iii) Mental element. International case-law has indicated that war crimes are violations that are committed wilfully, ie., either intentionally (dolus directus) or recklessly (dolus

I too can share Wikipedia screenshots. ELIZA very much did not pass the Turing test, people were able to identify the human being at rates well above chance. And I never claimed it tested sapience lol, stop putting words into my mouth. Just that LLMs showed a remarkable advance.
Wikipedia. Two passages are highlighted:
• Baseline models (ELIZA and GPT-40) achieved win rates significantly below chance (23% and 21%, respectively).
• GPT-4.5 was identified as the human 73% of the time-significantly more often than the actual human participants

Full text:
In late March 2025, a study evaluated four systems (ELIZA, GPT-40, LLaMa-3.1-405B, and GPT-4.5) in two randomized, controlled, and pre-registered Turing tests with independent participant groups. Participants engaged in simultaneous 5-minute conversations with another human participant and one of these systems, then judged which conversational partner they believed to be human. When instructed to adopt a humanlike persona, GPT-4.5 was identified as the human 73% of the time-significantly more often than the actual human participants. LLaMa-3.1, under the same conditions, was judged to be human 56% of the time, not significantly more or less often than the humans they were compared to. Baseline models (ELIZA and GPT-40) achieved win rates significantly below chance (23% and 21%, respectively).

Yeah, me neither, I just think we should always present the best argument and that means not using dodgy data when there’s more convincing evidence. e.g. this graph showing number of news articles about trans people which spikes after 2020, or even just other google trends.
A graph showing number of news articles about trans people (per 30 days) against time. It’s a very small baseline before about 2015, when it starts growing to about 200 by 2019, and then grows to almost 400 in 2021 and peaks at over 1000 in 2022. (The data resolution is monthly and it’s quite noisy).

Nice job cherry-picking a sentence where he said (in 2020!) that he supports the existence of Israel as a country and no more than that (i.e. without further qualification), and twisting it to imply that he’s best buddies with Ben-Gvir. He literally refused to use the label Zionist at first!
During this week's hustings event hosted at Liberal Jewish Synagogue, organised by the Jewish Labour Movement with this paper and Labour Friends of Israel, the leadership hopeful was criticised on Twitter after he declined to call himself a Zionist. Other contenders, Emily Thornberry, Lisa Nandy and Rebecca Long- Bailey, did.Asked why he chose not to, he said: "I do support Zionism. I said that last night. I absolutely support the right of Israel to exist as a homeland."
"My only concern is that Zionism can mean slightly different things to different people, and as Lisa [Nandy] said, to some extent it has been weaponised. I wouldn't read too much into that. I said it loud and clear - and meant it - that I support Zionism without qualification."

Is this minister racist for clarifying that horsemeat is safe to eat? (I disagree with him here, because yes it’s normally safe to eat but as mentioned it was being sold as beef & coming from sources like retired racehorses without any checks or paperwork).
Horsemeat in burgers poses 'no risk' to food safety
Horse DNA has been found in some beefburgers being sold in UK and Irish supermarkets, the Republic of Ireland's food safety authority has said.
The meat came from two processing plants in Ireland, Liffey Meats and Silvercrest Foods, and the Dalepak Hambleton plant in Yorkshire.
The burgers were on sale in Tesco and Iceland in the UK and Ireland. In the Republic of Ireland they were on sale in Dunnes Stores, Lidl, and Aldi.
Ireland's Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney, said the discovery posed "no food safety risk".

Going after the top end is exactly what I’m suggesting here, though? Fuel subsidies would be a massive transfer of wealth to the rich, and those would be popular while the necessary tax rises to claw that back would not be. We are already subsidising fuel hugely by freezing fuel duty (see below)

Two problems with this: 1) The oil from Jackdaw will be sold on the open market, at prices which are set internationally. It won’t make a noticeable difference to prices. 2) We won’t have to use fossil fuels for much longer. Wind, solar, nuclear already provide over half our energy & growing!
A pie chart showing electricity generation this year. Renewables sit at 42.4%, Nuclear at 12.5%, making them ~55% in total. Fossil fuels provided just 27.3% of our electricity.

High speed rail has a footprint a fraction of the size of most roads. It’s worth building even through agricultural land - the benefits would be orders of magnitude higher. Take this motorway in the UK next to a HSR track (HS1 linking London to the channel tunnel in Dover):

So I’m just imaging that 40% of Americans wouldn’t vote for an atheist? A higher proportion than wouldn’t vote for a Muslim president (34%) or a gay president (22%). Meanwhile, the country is led by, effectively, religious fundamentalists. Why do you keep lying?
A poll showing that as of 2020, just 60% of Americans were willing to vote for an atheist for President. For comparison, 45% would vote for socialist, 66% for a Muslim, and 78% for a gay/lesbian person.
