Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 22/10/2025Atlanta tomorrow for Climax of Night. Last major I’m attending, I think. It’s weird saying goodbye to something I’ve been part of for two decades, even if as no one of consequence. Some scars never fade, though. 041
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 11/04/2025My guess is that they legitimately do not know - or care. They dumped him there and then moved on. 021

Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 15/03/2025Looking forward to the next part of ffxiv’s story where, much like ff9, a melodramatic femboy manipulates a queen into committing several genocides to validate his own superiority complex, only to be stopped by a group of companions led by a furry. 030
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 02/03/2025The reason people so easily dismiss this parallel is because the population of philadelphia includes people like themselves. They could see it happening to them. They do not see us as “normal people”, however, so they do not feel threatened by actions taken against us. 000
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 02/03/2025Nothing in particular, just growing the wardrobe. It’s an endless grind, haha. 110
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 13/02/2025If an attack does literally nothing 90% of the time you aren’t gonna bother testing to see if this fight is in that 10%, you’re gonna do a thing you know will work even if it’s maybe not completely optimal. 010
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 13/02/2025No, imo the fundamental issue is lack of transparency/feedback. An attack being effective in terms of elemental damage is the rule not the exception. A status effect being effective is the exception, not the rule, and not something you can typically determine in advance or intuit. 110
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 10/02/2025At the place I went to it was 100/sesh for a full face treatment, less if you bought a bundle of six. 030
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 27/01/2025I’d also like to add, while this is extreme and uncertain to happen, if they are given the ability to revert our social security records then that means the federal government has the authority to modify or revoke citizenship documents. Let that sink in a bit. 010
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 27/01/2025For those of us without an existing valid passport and who already have identifying documents changed we likely cannot even choose a passport matching our birth sex. The supporting paperwork won’t match. 110
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 26/01/2025I’ve honestly just kinda always existed in an attitude of “Does this harm other people? Then why not just let them live that way.” regarding basically every socially progressive thing. I didn’t know, or understand, gay people as a kid. I also was very “…So what’s the problem?” 010

Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 20/01/2025Only vaguely. Dunno if this might be a better subject for DMs or a separate thread however - it’s a bit far afield of the original subject. 100
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 18/01/2025Occasionally. Played a _lot_ of magic the gathering and the arkham horror lcg prior to the pandemic. Sometimes ttrpgs but not as much. 100
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 17/01/2025I tend to subscribe to the philosophy “I’d rather something be interesting than good”, and as a result chase what I can only describe as “dead ends” in game geneaologies. All of these are series that were mechanically inventive but ultimately died from a lack of mainstream interest. 100
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 17/01/2025Cheating a little on illusion since it’s more of an action adventure than an rpg. 000
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 17/01/2025Not an easy call but if I were to pick individual standouts I would say 4th gen is Lufia 2 or Illusion of Gaia, 5th is Legend of Dragoon or Koudelka and 6th is Shadow Hearts Covenant or Wild Arms 3, sticking to rpgs. That said those are more for being stylistic standouts than explicitly high quality 200
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 17/01/2025Easy to have happen. The ps2 had a monstrous game library compared to basically any other system. 100
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 17/01/2025It was kind of similar to the Limit Break mechanics in many final famtasy games, but since the abilities available were based on gear, it made equipment choices _way_ more nuanced than simply “number go up”. 000
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 17/01/2025Lufia 2 had a system where most equipment had special abilities that could be used like spells while equipped. Instead of mana/mp, however, they cost IP, a resource that was only available during combat and filled when damage was taken, proportional to % of hp received. 100
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 17/01/2025It’s a timing based system similar to say the Mario RPG games or Legend of Dragoon, but the timing system is utilized for basically everything in the game right down to the shop prices (you can do timing checks to fish for discounts). Mechanically they work like Dead by Daylight skill checks. 100
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 17/01/2025Lufia 2 particularly is imo a criminally underdiscussed classic. The IP system is a great way to make equipment in a jrpg matter outside of passive stats and resistances/ weaknesses. I’m baffled that nothing like that ever became a design mainstay of the genre. 100
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 17/01/2025I have a couple for different reasons. Shadow Hearts: Covenant for having a heavily iterated turn-based combat system with timing mechanics. Lufia 2 for having both excellent Zelda-esque dungeon design mixed with what I think is the first instance of equipment-based special attacks. 300
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 16/01/2025I’m actually not a designer, though I have a passing interest in rpgs. Engines aren’t really my forte since there are a huge number of factors for why you’d use one over the other and not all of them are player-facing. 100
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 16/01/2025For example how do you make jumping not just a clumsier dodge roll? How do you make attack verticality readable as well as range and width? Suddenly angle matters and not just size. 100
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 16/01/2025Firstly, in level design how do you incorporate verticality, and does freedom of movement open or constrain your design? High vertical mobility means you either end up with a lack of limear progression or more blunt progression gates. In combat, what does verticality add the other two axes don’t? 200
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 16/01/2025I think it’s extremely contextual. In a 2d sidescrolling metroidvania jumping is almost necessary to provide enough axes of movement for combat to have depth. For a 3d game you already have two-axis movement and the question ends up being one of both level design and combat design. (1/2) 100
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 16/01/2025Sekiro on the other hand is massively terrain focused and being able to jump adds _a lot_ both in terms of combat engagement and level design. 100
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 16/01/2025Minor nitpick: You can jump in DS, it’s just of dubious utility. To answer your question I turn it on its head: what does _being able to jump_ contribute? Elden Ring has jumping but its applications outside of overworld platforming on Torrent is mostly just as a janky second dodge tool. 200
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 16/01/2025Super Metroid was my introduction to these games as a kid and it’s funny, I took months to sort out how to get the gravity suit and spent that whole time in Maridia trying to explore the area with shinesparks and bomb jumping instead. 110
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 16/01/2025Edit: What I mean is that souls games _don’t_ let you sequence break with creative use of physics. Consider how iconic bomb jump shenanigans are in most metroid games for example. 200
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 16/01/2025A major detractor of Souls vs conventional metroidvania (including sotn) is that because progress is gatekept by hard binary checks (doors) instead of physics based checks (floor is deadly if you don’t have X, jump height requirement, etc), creative use of physics allows sequence breaking. 200
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 15/01/2025Thinking of swapping to lavender in a week or two, to match a new pair of shoes I ordered. 020
Quinn @qaenyin.bsky.social · 15/01/2025Specifically SotN. Souls games are pretty close siblings to metroidvanias structurally, just more focus on keys instead of movement abilities to unlock areas. 391
