"The Flapper and the Cat" (or associated with his works for La Vie Parisienne) by artist Chéri Hérouard (C. Hérouard) a celebrated French illustrator famous for his Art Deco style. Year: 1923.
The illustration depicts an elegant woman dressed in a flowing, classic Art Deco style gown and a stylized headscarf. She gently holds up a sleek black cat to her face while surrounded by floating, stylized autumn holly leaves against a warm, gold-toned background. The piece embodies the graceful, playful, and romantic aesthetic characteristic of early 20th-century French magazine illustrations.

"Autumn Magic" by artist Tarn Ellis
A whimsical digital illustration depicting an enchanted tree tunnel deep in autumn. The canopy forms a vibrant roof of fiery orange, yellow, and red leaves, while glowing warm fairy lights dance between the branches and carpet the forest floor. A single spiderweb rests in the right corner, adding a subtle touch of seasonal magic to the cozy, atmospheric pathway.

The marbled polecat (Vormela peregusna) looks like a ferret dressing up as a cheetah for Halloween. They're native to a semi-desert grassland strip from Eastern Europe to Central Asia. Like a skunk, they can spray a foul-smelling fluid from anal glands. Let's talk about them. (📷: Petra Prager)
A marbled polecat photo from Petra Prager. It looks almost exactly like a ferret, but the arched back is sort of orange with brown dots on it similar to a cheetah, and the head has a white stripe that reminds me of a skunk, with a long floofy tail and dark limbs. This one looks alert and at rest.

This kimono features a bold composition of plum blossom branches with delicate white flowers set against dramatic alternating panels of deep teal and black, creating a graphic sensibility that reflects the period's movement toward more streamlined design approaches. The rinzu damask ground displays the subtle sayagata pattern, a traditional geometric motif of interlocking swastikas that symbolizes prosperity and good fortune, providing textural depth beneath the surface decoration.

The artistic treatment combines screened motifs with faux-shibori techniques to create the bird forms, demonstrating the creative adaptation of traditional resist-dyeing methods through mechanized processes. The plum blossoms carry their traditional symbolism of perseverance and hope, particularly poignant during the challenging war years when such motifs offered spiritual comfort and cultural continuity. The bold color blocking and simplified compositional approach reflect the influence of modernist design principles that were beginning to infiltrate Japanese decorative arts, while the integration of traditional nature motifs maintains the garment's connection to classical Japanese aesthetic values. This piece exemplifies the transitional moment in Japanese textile history when traditional craftsmanship met industrial necessity, resulting in designs that were both economically practical and artistically innovative.

By contemporary artist Yu Miyazaki, this evocative portrait demonstrates a masterful continuation of Japanese figurative painting (bijin-ga)
Framed within a curtain of cascading lavender wisteria (fuji) blossoms, a young woman gazes downward in quiet, introspective contemplation. Her alabaster skin, subtly flushed with delicate rose tones around the eyelids and lips, is gently cradled by long, slender fingers held near her face. Strands of fine, dark hair flow across her shoulders, partially draped in delicate white lace trim while pale purple petals cluster softly against her forehead and cheeks. The portrait evokes an exquisitely fragile sensory atmosphere: the sweet, lingering perfume of spring wisteria suspended in still air, the soft touch of cool petals brushing against warm skin, the gentle rustle of delicate lace, and the breathless, intimate hush of a private, unspoken moment. Created by contemporary artist Yu Miyazaki, this evocative portrait demonstrates a masterful continuation of Japanese figurative painting (bijin-ga), bridging traditional sensibilities with modern psychological nuance. Wisteria has long held a cherished place in Japanese literature and visual culture, celebrated since the Heian period in classical waka poetry and kabuki theater as an emblem of refined elegance, tender longing, and quiet devotion. Miyazaki’s meticulous paint application reflects the core spirit of monozukuri (artisanal mastery and material reverence), layering fine mineral pigments and translucent glazes to achieve the luminous depth of the subject's complexion alongside the intricate, individual threads of her dark hair and woven lace.

Created around 1795, Japan, this woodblock print (ukiyo-e) forms the left sheet of Utamaro's celebrated diptych portraying women engaged in everyday culinary preparations.
Crouching in quiet focus, a woman prepares ingredients with a kitchen knife, her pale lavender-gray kimono adorned with an intricate geometric lattice pattern (shippō-tsunagi). Beside her, a coopered cedar water bucket (oke) proudly bears Kitagawa Utamaro's signature (Utamaro hitsu). Behind her, a mother in a slate-blue robe carries a young child piggyback (onbu), the infant leaning affectionately against her neck. In the background, an iron kettle (tetsubin) rests atop a clay stove alongside staved wooden buckets bound with braided green hoops. The scene evokes an intimate sensory atmosphere: the rhythmic scraping of steel against food, the gentle hum of boiling water in an iron kettle, the earthy aroma of woodsmoke and dried fish, and the soft, bustling warmth of an Edo-period household kitchen.
Created around 1795, this woodblock print (ukiyo-e) forms the left sheet of Utamaro's celebrated diptych portraying women engaged in everyday culinary preparations. Renowned as a master of bijinga (pictures of beautiful women), Utamaro elevated genre scenes (fūzokuga) by turning his gaze away from the idealized courtesans of the pleasure quarters to capture the authentic, graceful rhythm of domestic life. The print offers a vibrant document of late 18th-century Japanese material culture, highlighting the functional beauty of traditional kitchenware and daily textiles. Every utilitarian item—from the hand-forged knife to the coopered water buckets—reflects the spirit of monozukuri (artisanal craftsmanship), where everyday tools are crafted with understated dignity and structural integrity.

Baade's Window - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/2q7ttqg
Baade's Window is a unique region in the constellation Sagittarius that is notable for its relatively clear view towards the central bulge of our galaxy, through the otherwise dense dust clouds of the Milky Way. Named after the astronomer Walter Baade, who identified its significance, this area provides a unique observational window for studying the structure and composition of the Galactic Centre. It has allowed scientists to explore the distribution of stars, star clusters, and other celestial phenomena that are otherwise hidden behind the galactic dust.
Baade's Window is centered on the globular cluster NGC 6522, visible in the left of this image. The other globular cluster is NGC6528 which in comparison appears significantly reddened by obscuring dust.

Japanese graffiti ,Shibuya, Tokyo
Painted directly onto a textured, off-white stucco exterior wall, this urban mural blurs the boundary between traditional decorative painting and contemporary street art. At its center, a painted vertical hanging scroll (kakejiku) rendered in ochre and earth tones displays a delicate study of crimson plum blossoms (koubai). In a clever trompe-l'œil illusion, gnarled plum branches burst outward beyond the scroll's visual borders, trailing pale pink blooms across the rough plaster. To the left, a modern outdoor water heater—bearing a swift, black marker tag—and exposed utility piping create a sharp, tactile contrast against the organic elegance of the painted flora. The scene evokes a distinct urban sensory atmosphere: the cool air of a Shibuya backstreet, the coarse grain of weathered stucco, and the quiet surprise of encountering seasonal beauty mounted beside industrial utility.
Situated within the alleyways of Shibuya, this piece exemplifies Tokyo's evolving street art landscape, where classical Japanese artistic motifs (kachō-ga, or flower-and-bird genre painting) are recontextualized on concrete and plaster. Traditionally, the kakejiku was displayed inside a home's tokonoma (display alcove) to mark seasonal transitions; here, the mural democratizes the alcove, bringing seasonal contemplation out into the public sphere. The plum blossom (ume) holds deep historical significance as the first flower to bloom amidst late-winter cold, symbolizing endurance, courage, and spiritual renewal.
