Niamh first lot of mischief of the day satisfied, she swam off to see about breakfast when she saw a net floating in the blue waters and catching nothing.

Above the water line the fisher, Morgan, sat in his little boat before the warming yellow of a fresh horizon.

The sky was in a prettier mood than he was.

He was pulling up the net, which was old and had, despite his repairs, made new holes in itself.

With a despondent look he tugged it back up into the boat when with a glance back into the water he saw one of the selkies, with a brown speckled face and the look of a rascal. He was pretty sure he recognised her as among those that stole his whisky the night before.

In a abrupt thrust she reached into his boat and snatched up the net, completely unheeded by his attempts to stop her.

Then taking the lot she drove back into the sea with it, leaving him desperately grasping after her and catching nothing.

Suspended in a state of bewildered worry, Morgan remained leaning over the edge of his boat, looking into the water, not knowing what to do when a selkie steals your fishing net.

There he lingered for a quiet uneasy moment, while the water lapped at the side of his boat in the otherwise silent stillness.

Eventually he notice a ripple and some bubbles coming up from under the hull. He leaned in for a closer look, hoping to catch sight of the selkie with his fishing net.

Then the water’s surface suddenly erupted. Morgan threw himself back just in time not to be buried under a enormous load of fish that the selkie had returned with in his net. She had launched the haul into the tiny boat and it filled the capacity of the small wooden vessel, leaving Morgan baffled and squashed on the edge of the boat to make room for the flailing mass of scaley sea creatures.

That same morning the village was experiencing fine weather, the water was as still as a pond and the sky, though not blue, was bright.

It was a good day, even if the local trawler fishers didn’t seem to notice. They were to consuming watching Morgan, not that they knew his name, weighing his abnormally bountiful catch.

They hung about in the doorway of the wooden market, with folded arms and suspicious scowls while a murmur of fascination circled around the little man, who fished from a little dingy, and was now heaping more and more fish onto the scales.

Before Morgan, crates of the selkie’s catch lined the weigh-in desk, and around his knees more sacks of cod were still waiting to be weighed. Behind the counter a large man in an apron stood with a note book and continued to tally up haul with a quietly impressed expression. Meanwhile Morgan heaped the haul onto the scales and stared at the meter with wide eyed excitement and disbelief.

It was a remarkable pay day for Morgan, who, when he was done with weigh-in, manuvued himself passed the glaring trawler men without noticing their hostility. He was experiencing far too much joy at the state of his coin purse that was fuller than it had ever been in his life.

When the comfortable, warmly tinged, afternoon came, Morgan walked down the grassy bank as he reached into his sachel and took from it bottles of whiskey. He had a look of nervous but hopeful anticipation as he made his way to the beach that the selkies had danced on the night before.

He crested the high point of the grass and saw that the clan was there, and that they in turn had seen him. He showed them the bottles, which were acknowledge with enthusiasm. A party of the fey met him on the grass and clustered around, taking the grog and reaching into his satchel for more. Among them was the ever delighted Niamh who he passed a bottle too.

Having taken their share of drink, the selkies let Morgan follow them down to the sand where he saw the large intimidating bull, who acknowledged him with some uncertainty but regardless, when Morgsn handed him a bottle of drink he warily accepted it.

This wary, uncertainly transformed into open confused when, having oassed over the whiskey, Morgan carefully sat down next to the bull. Odan stared, but made no objection, the skinny human had, after all, brought him booze.
