I know people who gave up on SNK from the moment it was reported that Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, had bought a majority share in the company. I couldn't possibly blame them—but for me, as long as it didn't appear to influence the direction of the games, I could ignore it as a rich person inevitably growing richer, way up at the top—"out of sight, out of mind." Sadly, that's changed now. Forcing a player on a Saudi-owned sports team into the base roster of an unrelated game makes it impossible to miss. I don't wish to be party to the Saudi government fortifying their interests via buying their way into cultural prominence.

Nor can I abide the specific inclusion of Cristiano Ronaldo, an accused rapist whose court case was dismissed on a technicality—due to how evidence was obtained, regardless of its veracity—and whose public reputation continues to be protected by the momentum of fame and supporters who stand to profit from it. His role in this game will only add to his undeserved goodwill and his false air of legitimacy.

My heart goes out to Yasuyuki Oda and other SNK staff, whom I truly believe to have intended this game as a sincere labour of love—the unbelievable fruition of a dream deferred twenty-five years ago. There is no doubt in my mind that this was an order handed down from above. It makes it all the sadder that, less than a month from release, my conscience requires me to pretend it all never happened.

We are all free to decide for ourselves, where we draw the line with stuff like this. But that freedom also bears responsibility—to recognise the line when we see it, and to make the call that enough's enough, in accordance with what we hold to be important. As much as I wish it hadn't come to this, for me, that's here.
