Addressing the culture of #noise in one of America’s oldest cities. #Noisepollution is a #publichealth and #environmentaljustice issue — and prevention is preferable to punishment. “Noise is the New Smoking.” More information at ProvidenceNoiseProject.org.

We assume you’re referring to a police captain? We don’t want to over-generalize, but it’s often in the interests of the police to downplay the severity / ubiquity / adverse effects of #noise, unless they’re *genuinely* committed to curtailing it. In many cities, it’s the top complaint they receive.

All too often, people who know (or should know) better still refer to excessive sound levels as a quality-of-life issue, when it’s far more than that — a #publichealth, socio-environmental, and #environmentaljustice issue — that adversely affects all of us. providencenoiseproject.org/why-noise-is...

Two City Council primary winners who didn’t fill out our candidate survey expressed a willingness to discuss #noise with us after the vote — thus acknowledging it’s an issue in their wards but avoiding being seen to do so during the election out of concern about violating libertarian-left orthodoxy.

@samghoward.riliberator.com bravely blocked us after we responded to his post about our 2026 primary endorsements. He didn’t say 1) we only endorse candidates, including David Morales, who answer our survey, and 2) multiple candidates who didn’t noted #noise complaints from residents in their wards.

We get that some people read the word “none” as being broadly anti-woke. We’ve altered the wording and included an explanation of the change. That hardly constitutes willful obtuseness — nor does it change our view that too many “woke” progressives are far too quick to rationalize anti-social noise.

PVD Noise Project @pvdnoiseproject.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
> “Talking about other things”? Isn’t that what your first response did — claim the Noise Project has issues other than noise? (We don’t.) For the record, we endorsed David Morales in the mayoral primary. We’re not “anti-woke” or “pro” any ideology. We *just* want to reduce unhealthy #noise levels.

PVD Noise Project @pvdnoiseproject.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Our point is that when *we* talk about PVD residents being “woke” we’re referring to those involuntarily awakened in the middle of the night by excessive, deliberate and unnecessary #noise — which is reflexively defended by many self-described “woke” residents. How is #sleepdeprivation progressive?

Your need to cast vague aspersions on an organization to deflect from the issues it raises is hardly a reading-comprehension problem — it’s a plain-old ad hominem attack, as we noted in our response, which you clearly saw. More relevant is why you feel compelled to *avoid* addressing noise issues?🤷🏻‍♂️

If you’d wanted help building support for a better ordinance, our organization was ready and willing to help, but you wouldn’t meet with us. Is there any public evidence you fought for a stronger bill? It was all backroom dealing with the landscapers lobby and the mayor’s staff, excluding residents.

Please explain which parts of those 2 paragraphs are wrong — we’re genuinely interested to understand. We think it’s a public-policy issue that should’ve been fully discussed, but Sue *now* says she unilaterally changed the ordinance in response to a veto threat residents never heard. #transparency?

Sue, you’re deliberately pretending that only one PNP volunteer opposed your abysmal leafblower ordinance, ignoring all PVD residents who say EIGHT years is a ridiculous interval between passage and prohibition. Even Quiet Clean RI says it’s too long. If you want to discuss it, we’re ready. Are you?

Interesting take on #noise, PVD residents seeking to reduce it, and those who’ve been asking for that literally for decades. Is your comment *really* about noise, or something else? We’re happy to dialogue on any noise-related issues either here and / or by contacting us directly. Let’s discuss it!

@SueAnderbois.bsky.social, the only response we got was citing purported veto threat for the glacial #leafblower-sunset timeline — we never heard why you didn’t tell your constituents / all PVD residents about the alleged threat at the time for #transparency and #accountability. When did leftists become libertarians? The root of “socialism” is “society” — not “individual.” It’s the right wing that thinks everyone is entitled to do whatever they want, regardless of its effects on others. The left was communitarian and valued the public interest and collective welfare of all.

PVD Noise Project @pvdnoiseproject.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
We hear that about urban #noise all the time, and it’s not any more accurate when applied to motorcycles. Got any data on the rate of motorcycle collisions vs. accidents caused by other things (e.g., loose gravel, uneven pavement, inclement weather, driver error, etc)? That would prove your point.
100
PVD Noise Project @pvdnoiseproject.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
Fair enough, but inundating the surrounding area with thunderous #noise is like using a hammer to kill mosquitos. It would be far better to mandate an adaptive technology like transponder-triggered ADAS than to wake everyone within a half-mile radius wherever one goes — unless that’s the real goal.
000
PVD Noise Project @pvdnoiseproject.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
Especially counterfactual ones. There’s no data showing motorcycles with loud exhausts are involved in fewer collisions than those that don’t have them. Most of the guys — and it is mostly men — who have louder exhausts do so for the attention, not safety. Loud pipes are a form of dress-up for them.
000
PVD Noise Project @pvdnoiseproject.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
But the “audio signal,” as you put it (read: #noise) doesn’t provide much actionable information. One can look around to try to find the source, but it can be hard to do so while driving. Sirens are also often hard to locate, and low-frequency exhaust tones are more omnidirectional than higher ones.

Maybe, but loud mufflers don’t effectively remedy the situation. Motorcycles aren’t dangerous because they’re quiet, they’re unsafe because they’re small, hard to see, balanced on two wheels, and not enclosed in steel. Being loud doesn’t *meaningfully* change those things — including low visibility.
100
PVD Noise Project @pvdnoiseproject.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
Civil liberties aren’t absolute, any more than freedom of speech or other constitutional rights. Public space (including the air and collective soundscape) is shared and regulated. Listening for excessive noise isn’t meaningfully different from sampling the air for pollution to identify the source.

That’s a disproven myth. There’s no data showing motorcycles without loud exhausts experience more collisions than those with them. It’s like Americans who claim they need a giant SUV for hauling kids / cargo or inclement weather when most drive them alone and live in places with minimal or no snow.

*Some* #noise is unavoidable, such as thunder or temporary construction, or even necessary (e.g., emergency-vehicle sirens), but most noise — especially the sources that noise denialists reflexively defend, such as modified mufflers or over-amplified stereos — is deliberately and unnecessarily loud.

People *should* be against “loud #noise” — just like they should be against other forms of #airpollution and toxins in our rivers, oceans, and drinking water. Excessive sound levels are unhealthy in a variety of ways, similar to cigarettes. Or do the local noise denialists dispute that fact as well?

@jamellebouie.net The same #antisocial pathology is manifested in the “performative masculinity” of unhealthy, unnecessary, and transgressive sound levels — primarily modified mufflers and over-amplified audio systems in vehicles, residential neighborhoods, and (in Providence, RI) even public parks.
