Frustrated by inaction on the threat of cars on their street, the 1970s residents of Delft's Tuinstraat illicitly erected barriers to curb traffic. This act of rebellion became a global revolution—inventing the woonerf (“living street”): a common space for recreation, vegetation, and socialization.
A before and after image of a residential steeet in Delft. The before is a paved space dominated by car traffic. The after a lush garden space populated by trees and planters.

Erect more barriers! Residents - often women - erecting makeshift, temporary and illicit barriers, has been one of the most consistent ways that street space has been reclaimed from cars, especially for children, over the decades.
"Defiant mums in a Middlesbrough street put up barricades to prevent traffic using their road. They claim the traffic in Tennyson Street is putting their children lives at risk. 26th August 1978"A new story about residents erecting a barricade made of dustbins to protect their playing children. From Whitley Bay, 1971. A news story from North Shields, of mothers erecting a barricade made of dustbins, tyres, bed heads and bicycles, to stop drivers taking short cuts through their designated play street, from the 1970s.

Spent the afternoon at the Tish Murtha (and Kuba Ryniewicz) exhibition at Baltic. So many fabulous - and poignant - photos, but struck, as always with Murtha’s work, by what a tough deal the communities of the north-east have had for so long.

Starting a signs of play thread. We’re always hearing about how children don’t play outside anymore, but that’s not the whole story. Cycling often takes you through neighbourhoods where there is no through traffic. This is where you’re most likely to see signs of play.
Photo of two storey post-war Radburn-style housing with brick ground floor and coloured tiles above - some houses red, some blue and some grey. Blue sky with white clouds. In the foreground is a grassed roundabout with two white gaol posts. There are cars parked beyond this.
