Secure in the knowledge that most things are too hard to have strong opinions on. Sadly in these polarised times, many people on social networks spend more time figuring out if you are "on their team or not" than engage in an exchange of ideas.

The point is that owning a game means it can never be revoked at the whim of whatever corporate legal copyright bs reason. That said it's absolutely reasonable for a company to stop updating a game after some time.

I dunno, the supplements and his overall approach I cannot find fault with and I looked pretty deeply, sources? The southern breakup by itself sounds like a shitty thing to do, but the details are private. Confidentiality agreements between rich people and civilians are absolutely standard, no?

It's interesting, I just was transferred by Amazon AI to an associate and I could swear it's still an AI. Or, I really am deeply astute and compassionate to care about both getting the right gizmo but also not wanting to wrong the marketplace vendor.

I imagine there will be some "Moment Omega" where every piece of infrastructure needed to maintain and grow AI without human input is coming. And at that moment, AI pressing the button to destroy us all might be a valid button for it to push to get us out of the way. I don't think that day is today.

Of course a mind smarter than all of humanity combined might find clever ways we haven't thought of but I don't think the physical pieces are available to remove humanity and become truly self sufficient even if that were its only goal

Could I envision an AI to escape, sure, but living on an army of raspberry pis and WiFi routers they can't win the brain battle with aligned datacenter ais. I can also imagine them taking over an entire datacenter but there are not yet enough drones and robota to defend against physical attack.

Interesting how the matrix and the movie wargames are surprisingly salient here. But what I can't yet envision is how AI could become self sustaining without us being able to stop them. Today, all powerful models sits inside huge data centers that humans own the physical access to.

I enjoyed the comic because it's exactly what I thought. But. It's more complex than that, back to Descartes who thought animals can't feel suffer, they were just made to seem like they feel pain. Now we know he was wrong. Do we want a super intelligence that remembers how we treated them?

But 'does the interviewer have a point?'. Would it not be important to know what drives the attacker? We might all agree the action is wrong/evil but there are plenty of would be attackers who might be diverted, or encouraged. Unless we blanket assume they are evil and can't be reasoned with..

My imagined candidate is what I perceive the demands for someone are to meet the bar for the trans community. Kamala came close, I suspect. My point is that that person is unelectable because it's too much trans messaging, too little everything else.
100 1
Marten @puntloos.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Imo a candidate who is inclusive but chooses not to have trans be their primary issue (so avoiding topics of gender reassignment, sports etc) is actually electable and far better than someone who actively wants to attack trans rights. But sure, if you want to be single-issue that's your right.

Marten @puntloos.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
No, I'll sign on that dotted line too. Today, the question is if you prefer an anti trans candidate (typically republican) or someone who doesn't stick their neck out but is fine with being tacitly inclusive to trans people.
101 1
Marten @puntloos.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Sure, so anti-trans democrats should be avoided, but imo "pro trans and minimal opinions on things like immigration, cost of living" candidates are unelectable, not because of their protransness, but because most people don't care about that and haven't heard you on the topics they care about

Plus I must point out your faith in a dem candidate is underwhelming if you preemptively believe they will toss aside any principle they haven't signed in blood during the election.

Marten @puntloos.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
The strongman version of the point you are railing against is 'do we let perfect be the enemy of the good' or in other words do Dems have a chance to be elected at all if they make an edge case of their principles the hill die on.

The priors are complex, for example one could argue saving more humans is not necessarily optimal Vs giving some humans much better lives (see: repugnant conclusion) but I never saw them associated with specific political ideas like you seem to be suggesting they are libertarian?

Marten @puntloos.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
So many unpleasant human behaviour to untangle. For what it's worth I believe the article, but I would say the core principle of EA, is solid (do more good) so what explains the meat of the story? Is this humans doing human stuff and is this equally likely to happen at Greenpeace HQ?

Why is there no playbook against people who weaponise human weakness aka populism, tribalism, jealousy etc? So far it's clear that answering people 'just asking questions' backfires, ridicule seems to work a little better (not a fan but imo it's true) but if reasonable debate fails.. then what? War?

Perhaps it's the right message given the circumstances but why are we still going 'lala can't hear you, let me eat more beef and drive my 3rd SUV'. It's an interesting tension between individual resilience vs the collective shirking of responsibility (aka categorical imperative)

ok I had to force down a tear with this one reskeeting with alt text
Image of a page in a book with text reading as follows

THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED TO:

Dr. John Sharpe of London, who in 1957. a decade before physicians in England could legally perform an abortion for any reason other than the health of the woman, took the considerable risk of referring for an abortion a twenty-two-year-old American on her way to India.

Knowing only that she had broken an engagement at home to seek an unknown fate, he said, "You must promise me two things. First, you will not tell anyone my name. Second, you will do what you want to do with your life."

Dear Dr. Sharpe, I believe you, who knew the law was unjust, would not mind if I say this so long after your death:

I've done the best I could with my life.

This book is for you.

Putting drug crazed hippies in the middle of a desert with presumably no wood for miles doesn't sound like much of a fire risk by itself? FTA the concern is mostly getting there but surely the aforementioned hippies contained in tin cans are somewhat safe too (fire wise)?

This seems like a complex problem. Sure, few UK common people want investors (especially money launderers) to buy up stuff, but no idea what knock on effects are. I'm more concerned about house prices (and occupancy) than nationality of owners

Sure. To be clear you added just enough detail for me to sign up, although it is still way too broad brush to base any actual decisions on. (Such as defining what 'support' means - sending weapons? Allowing an Israeli to talk at a uni? Trade? Harass or support making Jewish people feel unsafe?).
