The Canes won the cup right on schedule by the contention roadmap last season. There is no team in a similar position this season. Will the Canes repeat? Is the door open for an established reloading team or a rising younger team?

6 x $13.5MM for Cutter Gauthier Carlsson/Gauthier/Lacombe almost 40% of the cap this season. Closer to 30% at the end of Carlsson's deal when the Ducks window should be opening wide

The Habs add Chris Kreider on a 1 year deal. Doesn't fit their contention cohort at all, but a reasonable short term complementary piece for a team on the rise.

And the Petry Tree is only the start. There's an entire forest if we keep following connections. Here's the Petry Tree connected with the Martin St Louis tree in 2 places.

Greg Amundsen @puckluck83.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
After this point, the tree really started to grow with multiple trades per season adding new branches. It's still very much alive, with numerous active players and plenty of recent draft picks connected.

The tree went quiet for a few years again, until it started to expand more rapidly starting in the 20/21 with the Caps sending Jonah Seigenthaler to the Devils for a pick. Then in the 2021 offseason, the Oilers acquired Duncan Keith with Caleb Jones going back to Chicago as part of the deal.

Greg Amundsen @puckluck83.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
The tree went quiet for a few years until the Oilers made another goalie trade during the 2018/19 season. Both Cam Talbot and Anthony Stolarz would hit UFA status the following summer, ending the Talbot branch of the tree.

Greg Amundsen @puckluck83.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
The Oilers, Rangers and Capitals made 6 picks in the 2015 draft that were involved in the trade tree, with the Capitals selection of Jonas Seigenthaler in the 2nd round the best of the bunch.

The Oilers flipped the second round pick they received for Petry before they had a chance to use it, acquiring Cam Talbot from the Rangers in another deal that saw all 5 assets subsequently traded again.

A few years ago, I started connecting trades and the resulting trade web seems to be ever expanding. This was the original root node that saw Jeff Petry leave EDM for 2 picks. It's August. Let's explore the web from here. Comment if there's a connection you'd like to see next (1, 2, or 3)

If Pettersson and Larkin are the best realistic replacements, you’re pretty much throwing in the towel on the current rebuild if you don’t match. I think you have to match and be cap conscious going forward. $18MM isn’t going to look so bad in 5 years when they’re really ready to contend
110
Greg Amundsen @puckluck83.bsky.social · 04/07/2026
If you let the Flyers have him, what is the next move? How do you replace the rebuild cohort’s 1C?
100
Greg Amundsen @puckluck83.bsky.social · 04/07/2026
The 1sts don’t fit the Ducks timeline. And they’re likely mid-late 1sts depending on the Flyers results with Carlsson on their roster. Ducks would have to flip them for a Carlsson equivalent which is likely via another offer sheet that they have to overpay a contract
100
Greg Amundsen @puckluck83.bsky.social · 04/07/2026
We're only 3 years removed from the 2023 when the Ducks took Carlsson 2nd overall. They are highly unlikely to have another 2OA pick if they continue building this roster. If Verbeek doesn't match, how does he replace his 1C for the next 5-10 years?
120
Greg Amundsen @puckluck83.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
Another lesson in why teams shouldn't grind every contract negotiation today. Elite players are hard to acquire. This week, Verbeek either makes Carlsson the highest paid player in the NHL or loses the centerpiece of the Ducks rebuild before it really takes flight.

Outside of Colton Sissions, the Leafs forward core rebuilt by John Chayka is reasonably cap efficient. A real potpourrie of veterans though.
