@hexbirdbot.bsky.social thought so - the EC135 (#271) had a patchy MLAT track, but I am pretty sure it visited on October 5th. RAF uses H145's for training from Valley, right? Ireland has 4x H145Ms on order, plus another two for the Gardai (piloted by Air Corps). So perhaps, preparatory training.

Irish Air Corps AW139 (#278) paid a visit to RAF Valley today, this follows one of the Air Corps EC135's visiting earlier in October.

Interesting long duration patrol by RAF Protector RG Mk 1 in the English Channel today; looks like a CH-47 might have operated in the general area as well. Also asked myself question - can you see an RG Mk 1 in Sentinel 2 imagery? Answer: maybe. Circa 50.190 -0.322 in today's pass.

I wouldn't rule it out, but I don't think current vessel positioning supports a Burevestnik test from Pankovo, Novaya Zemlya. But I am just an egg. There is this GND-UNL NOTAM active today from White Sea to the Barents, however, suggesting some kind of activity.

This period remains, perhaps, the most interesting of the 2026 test season - so far. Vessel layout wise, basically a repeat of activity from the only confirmed test last year. The presence of Rossita in Severny at same time is interesting. There were other vessels that didn't transmit on AIS.

🇫🇷🚀☢️ French Ministry of Armed Forces just confirmed the successful launch of an M51.3 intercontinental ballistic missile from the SSBN Le Vigilant, confirming its return to the operational cycle after 3 years of maintenance.

This was the first operational launch of this new version of the missile from a SSBN.

For the occasion, @CalvaireDrach
and I prepared an infographic showing how such a launch unfolds, from the transmission of the order to the impact of the reentry vehicle(s) — without their nuclear warheads — in the Atlantic Ocean, 4,700 km West of the launch area.

This infographic is based on the analysis of American documentation, which is very extensive on the subject. There may be slight differences between the French and American systems (M51 vs. Trident II D5), but the general principles described here are common to this type of missile. The major differences lie in the details — network meshing and encryption, number and type of vectored objects, bus maneuvering capability and accuracy, weapon energy and governmental control systems, etc. These are protected by the utmost secrecy.

I will soon publish a more detail article on this on Letstalkdeterrence.

Many thanks to @CalvaireDrach
for the work — if you wish to reuse this diagram, please credit her🙏

One thing that has fascinated me about Kosvinsky Kamen since I first started gawking at it a while ago, are the apparent mining operations that take place around it. I have visions of miners accidentally knocking through to the command and control facilities.

And a closer view over North Dakota and the missile silos. Even though this is hours before - you can kinda see how a system primed to detect launches, could possibly interpret these as trails from ICBMs...

Irish Air Corps C295 MSA (#285) appeared to take a look at vessel FIDAN (IMO: 9423736) on its way from Russia to Algiers, earlier today. Somewhat unusual to see ADS-B tracks at low level this far from land based receivers; possibly tropospheric ducting.

Not a shadow fleet vessel, or sanctioned, but Cpt Georgios S (IMO: 9262936) is currently on its way from Murmansk to Iskenderun, Turkey, making what appears from globalfishingwatch.org data, to be its first trip through the Irish Sea, at least since 2012. 👋
Map showing globalfishingwatch.org tracks of Cpt Georgios S, from 2012 to a few days ago - no tracks are visible through the Irish Sea, although it has visited the Shannon Estuary numerous times.VesselFinder map showing CPT GEORGIOS S transiting the Irish Sea, a brief (~3 hour) slow down is visible between Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Wherever I expected DORRY wind up, it wasn't off Portugal. What a wild track.
AIS map showing track of vessel DORRY, which went north off the coast of Portugal, swung northwest of Ireland before turning south east, disappearing off AIS for days, only to show up heading southeast off the coast of Portugal.

A less Twin Peaks update - spot the difference between vessel placement during the 21st of October 2025 test window and today. It does not mean a Burevestnik test is taking place - we cannot possibly know that from vessel placement alone - but it looks very, very similar.
Image showing vessel placement, NOTAMs, aircraft position around the only confirmed test of Burevestnik during 2025, on 21st of October 2025.Vessel placement today, 17th of September 2026. It is very similar to that of 21st of October 2025.

A quick look at some of the activity in the air around Andøya today. Fwiw, the NOTAM area shown doesn't kick in until 1800Z today 15th of September and runs to 0300Z on 16th of September. HYDROARC 222/26 runs through 09 - 19 September. HNoMS Otto Sverdrup is showing in the area on AIS.

Dorry, for whatever reason, has decided to go back southeast. I think C285 (Irish Air Corps C295 MSA) took a look

Rossita, a nuclear fuel carrier, appears to be making its way to Novaya Zemlya. In recent years, it has docked at the Severny test site during Summer/Autumn - so it is not unprecedented and can't be taken, by itself, as a sign of anything significant. Second image shows visits in 2023 & 2024.

Couple of US P-8s operating from Mildenhall today - wonder what they're up to. Based on some photos put up on Facebook, one might be equipped with the AN/APS-154 pod. Hex codes: ae680d & ae6838
Screenshot from ADSBExchange showing partial tracks of the two P-8s operating from Mildenhall - one went around the north of Ireland, the other appeared to go south toward Bay of Biscay
