Customers aren't allowed in the kitchen area

‘You are so important.’

I was staring at the fries bubbling in hot oil, waiting for my shift.

'I want to apologize. You will do do one thing. One wonderful act with such phenomenal consequences. ..’

He then proved he was a time traveler. I asked him why he was here.

'To stop you. Not your fault, but it turns out bad.’

I asked if he was going to kill me.

'No need. It won’t happen, now that you know. Your life will be uneventful. That’s what I wanted to apologize for.’

Sean Connery said of The Lord of the Rings (for which he was offered the part of Gandalf): "Yeah, well, I never understood it. I read the book. I read the script. I saw the movie. I still don’t understand it." Meanwhile, in 1974, this was apparently clear as glass.

Of course, no baggy clothes for professor Spiro. What do you mean "children's program for the BBC"?
Still from "Captain Zep Space Detective". On the right are two men: Captain Zep and Brown in baggy uniforms. On the left is the female professor Spiro. She wears a similar uniform, but form fitting, and with the shoulders cut out. The midriff is made of what looks like a transparent material. Uniforms or the in-studio segment. The clothes are still orange, but Brown is now dressed in a kind of disco-style pantsuit. Professor Spiro wears a black leotard, with a gold bikini bottom over it. It has gold lines radiating inwards from the breasts to the crotch. Over it she wear and orange Bolero and orange chaps. The Bolero has large patches over the breasts, with a black-on-orange spiral radiating out from the nipple. This is a kid's TV show made for the BBC.

Ansel Adams' famous photograph "Monolith": a sheer cliff face among snowy peaks, captures in meticulously leveled black and white. I've added a hot pink copyright notice. Sadly the technology to do this was unavailable to Adams' himself, otherwise he would surely have defended his artwork in this way from unscrupulous use.

#til Elaine Paige once starred in a musical about premature ejaculation.
At the age of 20, she made her West End debut in Hair[13] on 27 September 1968, remaining in the cast until March 1970.[14] While also being an understudy for the character of Sheila,[15] she played a member of the tribe in the chorus,[15] for which role she was required to be naked on stage in one scene.[10] In 1971, she appeared in the ill-fated musical about premature ejaculation, Maybe That's Your Problem.[16] She also appeared as an urchin in the film Oliver![17] Over the next decade, she played roles in various musicals, including Jesus Christ Superstar; Nuts; Grease, in which she played the lead role of Sandy from 1973 to 1974; Billy, from 1974 to 1975 playing Rita;[13][18] and The Boyfriend, as Maisie (1975–1976).[14] She had a minor role as a barmaid in the 1978 sex comedy film Adventures of a Plumber's Mate.[19]

Borges on Peronism.
It is useless to list the examples; one can only denounce the duplicity of the fictions of the former regime, which can't be believed and were believed. It will be said that the public's lack of sophistication is enough to explain the contradiction; I believe that the cause is more profound. Coleridge spoke of the "willing suspension of disbelief," that is, poetic faith; Samuel Johnson said, in defense of Shakespeare, that the spectators at a tragedy do not believe they are in Alexandria in the first act and Rome in the second but submit to the pleasure of a fiction. Similarly, the lies of a dictatorship are neither believed nor disbelieved; they pertain to an intermediate plane, and their purpose is to conceal or justify sordid or atrocious realities. They pertain to the pathetic or the clumsily sentimental. Happily, for the enlightenment and security of the Argentines, the current regime has understood that the function of government is not to inspire pathos.[99]

And as I sat there, brooding on the old unknown world, I thought of Gatsby’s wonder when he first picked out the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock. He had come a long way to this blue lawn and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him, somewhere back in that vast obscurity beyond the city, where the dark fields of the republic rolled on under the night.

Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . . And one fine morning—-

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past. There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda. . . . You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. . . .

And that, I think, was the handle—that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting—on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. . . .

So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.”

When you come over to use the fitness you require the following items.

- Sport clothing made for fitness.

No jeans, frying apron or sundresses.

- Indoor fitness shoes.

So no outside shoes inside the fitness.

That means if you're coming after a run outside, you need to change shoes upon arrival or continue on your socks.

- Bare feet are not allowed for hygiene reasons.

- Bring a towel and use it.

Put it down on the machine, place it on your bench or workout mat.

Can I use or adapt something you’ve written?

All short stories currently published on the front page are released under CC-BY 4.0. That means you are free to use any material from them, or to adapt them for commercial or non-commercial work, so long as you credit me. The form of credit depends a little on the medium you use. I’d prefer credit at the start (where that makes sense), but at the end is fine too. Where possible, please include the title of the original story and a link to the website. If this is not possible, reach out to me on Bluesky or mastodon to discuss.

Fan art is fair use, and does not require credit.

Don’t expect me to endorse something you make. Even if it’s good, it might simply not be what I imagined when I wrote the story. This applies especially if generative AI is involved. I’m not fully anti-AI, but I do find that these works are currently quite low effort and derivative by nature, with little respect for the work that went into the styles they ape. Still, technology evolves, and I’m always happy to be proved wrong.

...
AI training This license includes the right to use these stories in AI training data. However, if the resulting AI system spits out something that is similar enough to my stories to be covered by copyright, then it’s the responsibility of the system to give credit. If this is not technically possible, then the stories should not be included.

A proportion to be guessed at

Look closely at your hands. Your fingers in particular. Knuckles most of all. You will see they are riddled with tiny scars.

These are not like the big scars. The ones you remember living with. The ones that took weeks to go from wound to skin, and months to fade into memory. These are the wounds you don’t remember getting. Looking down at your thumb and seeing an unexpected, bloodless separation of the skin. Barely sore.

Together, they make up a record. A collection of the moments in your life you don’t remember.

I asked her whether it was true that the story of my captaincy horrified her. She told me that she had always been claustrophobic. The idea of being buried alive, or paralyzed had always haunted her. The captaincy felt like a natural extension of that idea. Even the general idea of life as a votive, living for so long, seemed to disturb her.

This would make her a better inductee candidate than most of the people in Mud. You need to be a little horrified by the prospect of so long a life. If you don't, if the horror of it comes by surprise, it will overtake you. You need to be prepared for it. I didn't tell her that, of course. She probably fails on a thousand other fronts. And the idea that I would be looking at her like that would probably stop her talking to me.

I watched them feed for a while. Then I looked up. Above me was the most remarkable sky. To the west, it was overcast, and getting very dark already, but for a thin, bright red sliver on the horizon. To the east, there was a sudden break in the clouds. At the edge, where the clouds broke, they looked remarkably solid. Like the edges of a cliff.
Beyond the clouds, the sky showed a blue-to-yellow gradient, almost as bright as daylight, streaked with red cumulus. High above the cloud cover, these thin wisps were still picking up the light of the sunset. Behind them, the stars were just beginning to come out.

Showing my ignorance here, but I only just realized that Putti (the little baby "angels" you see in Renaissance paintings) existed long before Christianity. They were totally appropriated, like Christmas and Easter and who knows what.
A statue of Augustus. A small winged infant is at his right foot. This is from the first century, so technically after christianity, but long before the Roman empire actually _adopted_ Christianity.

Borges on Nazism. I think this will be shown to be true of Trumpism as well. It is founded on a defiance of truth, and powered by rage. This makes it uninhabitable. The only way to keep it going is to keep fueling the rage, which soon becomes profoundly self-destructive.
Nazism suffers from unreality, like Erigena's hell. It is uninhabitable; men can only die for it, lie for it, wound and kill for it. No one, in the intimate depths of his being, can wish it to triumph. | shall risk this conjecture: Hitler wants to be defeated.
