The model labs (and now the US gov't) are increasingly concerned with model distillation: copying someone's model output to train your own model, and in the process gain new capabilities. But they don't use IP as an instrument for protection. Here I demystify distillation, and wonder why.

A solid article…but doesn't reckon with one of the biggest problems of both OA and preprints models - how they interact with AI. They are subsidizing AI training and are low barrier channels for dissemination. The pressure on editors and preprint custodians will grow exponentially...

Finally read this. Funny, but it is mostly an argument for why textbooks are a good thing in university teaching: "ensures consistent delivery of course material", "allows me to send less time on context and more on critical thinking & writing". Talented domain-trained editors help authors. Etc.
