Am I the only person who sees bugs in many websites? In the last hour, I tried to pay a @bankofamerica.bsky.social credit card — but I needed to edit the HTML to set my country as 'United States'. Also, paying Chase credit card I had to enter text into a disabled field to pass local validation.

After 14 years at @bitsight.bsky.social, I'm hanging up my hat and finally retiring. I'm going to be spending time working on #pskreporter — we got a grant from NCDXF to move the system to a more modern platform. I'm also looking for volunteers to help in this activity. lnkd.in/p/gjJ8CDgi

#eclipse From Calton Hill, Edinburgh, Scotland. The clouds kept on covering the sun and then clearing. We gave eclipse glasses to adjacent groups of people (I had bought a 12 pack from Amazon. 10 got delivered, and the rest got distributed.)
A thin crescent of sun masked by the moon. Some cloud makes the edge not as crisp as it ought to be.

My line voltage today has a nasty dip in it. The lights in my home office dimmed noticeably for a while.
Graph showing line voltage drooping to 117 volts for an hour or so, and then dropping to 112 for 5 minutes, and then recovering to 121

I just don't understand. I ordered a tree from Lowes. It shipped from Tennessee by Fedex 2Day. The retail price of the shipping was ~$760. My tree cost me ~$62 with free shipping. Someone is getting a raw deal here and it wasn't me! Tree looks healthy and undamaged.

Which hose manufacturer makes a hose with this profile? This makes the hose effectively unrepairable (even if you try and cut off the wart -- you can't get it to be watertight). Built-in obsolescence. Grrrrr.

Argh! I blew out on #Wordle today -- and broke my 275 day streak. The wordlebot says that the average solution took 5.3 guesses, but it didn't reveal how many people failed today. Anybody else prepared to admit failure?

@wx1box.bsky.social With long duration snowstorms, how should snowfall be measured? I.e. how often should I reset the snowboard? Over the weekend, I reset at 8AM on Monday and recorded very little extra snow. I suspect that had I reset at 8PM on Sunday as well, then my totals would have been higher.

Trying to vibe code a wideband morse decoder. It *sort of* works with nice clean signals. But with real recordings, it is unusable. The idea is to feed output from ka9q-radio (by @ka9q.bsky.social) into it and decode all CW traffic! Thoughts appreciated. github.com/pjsg/cw

Trying Google's Gemini image tool to colorize old pictures: Starting with the black and white image, and then two different colorization attempts. It is notable that it omitted the person in one case, also the steam blowing downards in both. Original was probably shot on orthochromatic film.

I'm actually pretty impressed -- I just installed a couple of Ubiquiti NanoStation 5AC units to connect the house to the barn. I was using a couple of their APs in a mesh, but it wouldn't stay connected once leaves appeared on the trees! Now it appears that I get a stable 100Mbps connection!

Some horrible internet connectivity problems right now. It appears that Comcast as lost some peering -- but I think it goes deeper than that. Paypal.com is not reachable from some places.

Just spent many hours debugging my #Unifi network. Symptom: high packet loss/vary variable latency. Running `top` on the AP showed 0% idle and very high sirq (??). This was due to a lot of multicast traffic on the wired side. U6 LR not affected -- I guess it does multicast filtering in hardware!

I got a an MR merged in #Wireshark so that it now decodes the IPFIX packets sent to #PSKReporter correctly -- the issue had been bugging me for years, and I should have done the MR much sooner as it turned out to be a trivial fix! Thanks to the maintainers...

This is a good an important piece but let's not overlook the bit where retired French railway workers are casually running a Batcave for train nerds
Quote:
That summer of 1993, as a last resort, we placed a classified ad in a French railway enthusiasts magazine: “Seeking information about 1914 Orient Express.” One issue later, our phone rang.

The voice on the other end proposed that we meet in their club, in the basement of Paris Gare de l’Est. We passed through a glass door marked “No Access” to discover a cavern of rooms filled with vintage railway posters, books, and the biggest working model train set I’ve ever seen. Our informants—a pair of retired French railway employees—were waiting.

We explained what we were looking for, and what SNCF had told us. A glint appeared in the two gentlemen’s eyes. The elder of the pair leaned forward. “They think they destroyed the archives,” he said. “We took ‘em home. We’ve got ‘em.”
