To be fair, although nobody thought Photoshop was "cheating", a lot of people thought it was a tool for "lying", and they kind of had a point there. Photo manipulation has done terrible things to body image and we haven't fully come to terms with that.

I know! It's right up there with "artists hated Photoshop" and I'm like "what are you talking about, Andy Warhol did stuff with digital paint and Kai Krause was a darling of the art world". Or "musicians hated synths". No, everyone loved Wendy Carlos and Jean-Michel Jarre.

If those bad things only happen to AI corporations and their CEOs, I'm actually fine with this.

The closest vibe in Australia to Miami is the Gold Coast. There's even a suburb called Miami! The vibe of Brisbane is more like Jacksonville with a bit of Sarasota thrown in. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miami,_...

Photography wasn't as derided by artists as AI influencers would have you think. There were a few, of course; there are always a few. But most realised that they could now paint and draw that which doesn't exist.

The scientific revolution began when guild secrecy ended. When we stopped hoarding information and started sharing it, alchemists became chemists and astrologers became astronomers. The frightening possibility here is that AI might be causing a new Dark Age.

He is the most pro-AI mathematician around. But he notes that AI gives mathematicians a disincentive to share hunches, because someone with more money to spend on tokens might scoop you. Today it's mathematics, tomorrow it could be some other field of research.

A lot of people are talking about the Navier-Stokes equation solution today, and the academic drama surrounding it, but few are talking about an extremely frightening possibility. Nobody except Terry Tao, that is. mathstodon.xyz/@tao/1172373...

Just as a comment, many countries have an age limit. Justices of the High Court of Australia, for example, cannot serve past the age of 75. That might be worth exploring.

Exactly this. And crucially, this "toxic dominance" is not in any way "traditional".

Of course it could be patronising as hell, especially in the workplace. Of course equality is better than chivalry. But that's not my point. My point is that it is not what these morons teach is unrecognisable as anything "traditional".

Andrew J. Bromage @pseudonym73.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
It does not even slightly resemble "traditional masculinity" as the silent/greatest generation men (who were the elders when I was a kid) taught me. They taught me chivalry. A man should be a gentleman and a mensch. Always kind, always gracious, always selfless towards the fair sex.

People don't realise just how dry some countries are. Australia, for example, has a lot of land, but proportionally very little water, and that which it does have is too precious. Of course Australia has built and is still building pumped hydro where it can, but in most places, it can't.

You know that there are some very small countries in the world, right? That /somewhere/ might be a different legal jurisdiction.

Exercise: You have completely flat terrain. What volume of earth would you need to excavate and move to make a pumped hydro arrangement with 100MWh of capacity? We will assume for the sake of argument that you can also somehow get that much water to the site.

I'm glad that someone is trying it. I feel like this sort of thing isn't as efficient as a lot of alternatives, but has the advantage that it's pretty cheap to build, especially if you use waste as the mass.

There are some fascinating hypothesised factors, like modern cars being close to impossible to steal, which eliminates one kind of gang activity. Or that gatherings of young people are more mixed-gender than in the past, so there is less chance that testosterone-fuelled violence will break out.
