Exit Party, the new Emily St. John Mandel and I'm enjoying it so much I don't want this first read to be over, but also really want to know how it pans out!

We celebrated last night by going to Topping's launch of @joannechocolat.bsky.social 's new book, Sleepers in the Snow, which sounds gloriously chilly and intriguing and just right for the turn of the seasons. A lovely event and a wonder to encounter the Shed Queen herself, magnificently engaging.

Crow and I are today celebrating one whole decade since we got married! Our little book business has been a beautiful constant every month of our married life, and we are so very grateful for it, and to our wonderful subscribers who have been so supportive on the journey so far x

Absolutely love to hear this - all handmade by my mum! (Genuinely letting her know, she will be so thrilled XD) We use them for soooo many things but there's really nothing better to keep a paperback neat, whether in the post, or in my handbag! 💛📚

Finding all the discussion truly fascinating - I've often reflected on the careful "Are you sure?" the local librarian asked me, the only time she ever questioned my borrowing choices, when I - aged 11 - filled out the form to ask her to order in American Psycho from the big library.

I have such a gorgeous set of her books now, but haven't read them since I was very small and borrowed them all from the library - I really should get stuck in...

Hi hi! Right now Crow and I are listening to The Horses, by Janina Matthewson, a book I enjoyed so much earlier in the year that I needed to share it with her at our earliest convenience. In allotment-listening, my Slough House odyssey has now reached Bad Actors, so that is also going well!

I always thought the BBC TV version of it would've been wonderful (again, I was peak audience then...); I was so sad they didn't get to it at the time. My very favourite is The Horse and His Boy, also untouched, at least on the plus side, that can be set whenever and still work!

Prudence and the Crow @prudenceandthecrow.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
I am sort of delighted that this isn't a ~faithful version, actually, and there's a chance I'm peak audience for this one, but also I do really want an accurate version, specifically, of TMN one day.

!!! I didn't even have three hours until this arrived at my door! @emilymandel.bsky.social it is so exciting to have a book that I know will be as thrilling as the gorgeous design of the fancy limited edition. Also, your signature is very cool. My evening plans are thoroughly remade.
The front cover of Exit Party, by Emily St. John Mandel, Waterstones signed exclusive edition. The pages of the fancy Waterstones edition of Emily St. John Mandel's Exit Party - a blue-green Florida swamp swirls down the edges of the pages until it becomes an upside down orange-yellow Eiffel Tower (probably, I've not read the synopsis, I'm just going on looks).Emily St. John Mandel's signed front page, it's a solid marker pen signature in the centre space between a full page illustration of the edge design (previous photo).

Just read that the new Emily St John Mandel is centered around a character from a previous book that is not one of the two I've just reread, so now I have three days to revisit that one or the details will drive me nuts XD A fun challenge, though...

What kinds of small party favors do people actually like to receive at book release events? A lot of authors give out stickers, but do adult readers like receiving stickers? You only need so many keychains in a lifetime. What to do? #AuthorSky #BookSky #SFF #Fantasy 🪐📚

Oo, I will always love a sticker, see also a postcard, or a bookmark, or a custom bookplate (nerd favourite if it has stuff for me to fill out about the book on it, when I started/finished, room to write a sentence or so)...ephemera that I can keep in a book or journal never goes amiss!

Oo thread, yes, I'm currently experiencing a LOT of reading blurbs and thinking WOW what a concept, and then I take a look at the writing style and no no no, that's not going to be for me, there's a problem. Publishers, you're getting too catchy-clever with blurbs for your authors' own good!

Had a TERF troll come to my event at Edinburgh today, who wanted to defend the “lovely Jo Rowling” during my q&a. Reader, my reply was impassioned. I didn’t insult her or call her a name; but I robustly and heatedly defended the lives of young trans people against very unlovely billionaires.

I love libraries, and will always support, always, of course, but I am disappointed that there's a £1.40 charge to request a book from the other libraries in the area. I suppose we were spoiled in London and Cardiff, being able to request and borrow books from libraries in the district for free...

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library has never been anything less than an inspiration, a joy, a model for the perfect book subscription, supporting children's access to books like nobody else. I have always loved her, saw her once live in Cardiff, and will treasure that memory forever. A true light.

Just reflecting on this with P - we had A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Ghost of Thomas Kempe, and Talking Heads is at least funny at times, if not actually fun, but yes, these moments are outweighed by every gruelling second spent on bloody Walkabout.
