I emailed catlabs (US) to see if I could get one express, but they haven't replied in a couple days. Only other option is to order one from China, but that takes ~3 weeks and I really need to be able to test this thing by next week

FIRST TEST OF DA DIGITAL RANGEFINDER. IN 645 FLAVOR. IT KINDA SLAPS. i mean not literally cause its not a mirrored device shhh. its: very heavy. i probably need a better grip for it. but its also very fun. :)

what if camera, but *worse*?

note to self: while this contraption *does* work, it has the downsides of being absolutely massive and basically pointless. using the back on a hasselblad is far less clunky

claire @protosphere.me · 25/09/2026
this is extra weird, because it *does* have a 65mm cam!
100
claire @protosphere.me · 25/09/2026
weirdly my technika does not have divots in the track for a 65mm, so i just set it up as described in the manual and marked the 65mm infinity point with a marker

yeah i’ve got a digital rangefinder

Would be interesting to see what a roll of colour film reloaded into an IXMOO does then! If the paint has worn off them, I wonder if the IXMOO is reflecting light around somehow…

As much as I want to shoot 8x10” I am slowly getting scared away from it

claire @protosphere.me · 23/09/2026
An 8x10 film holder goes for…€250? Ooooof.

now of course the film itself is still exactly one billion dollars, so i’ll be exclusively shooting fomapan, but,

claire @protosphere.me · 23/09/2026
perhaps against the best interests of my wallet, i have found a place that does mail-in 8x10 dev for the same price that i’ve been paying for 4x5

Yeah, it has some beautiful OoF rendering, though takes some practice to utilise it properly. I think I'd probably go for something like an M2 this time around - M4s are getting pricey and idk if it's worth the investment for me anymore, especially without a collection of M lenses to use on it.

claire @protosphere.me · 21/09/2026
Yeah, you're probably right on that one. And I have a really nice M-adapted lens (forum.mflenses.com/aires-coral-...) which I would love to use with an actual rangefinder instead of just via adapters on a mirrorless.

I have a really nice 1910s (I think?) 21cm Voigtländer Heliar that covers 8x10, and being able to use that on a nice wooden 8x10 would be wonderful

I am considering either getting an analogue Leica M again or getting into 8x10". But for 8x10", I need to figure out something for developing and printing myself (probably some sort of darkroom I can hire out, since I can't do it at home. Yes I know it's possible, but it doesn't work out in my case)

Don’t really want to part with the camera for a couple of months, but I figure when it comes back I can make nicer pictures with it and that’s worth it imo

claire @protosphere.me · 19/09/2026
The Leica I model B is off for a CLA 🫡. Lens is pretty hazy and I figure the nearly 100-year-old Compur shutter could use a service too. And such a nice camera deserves to be in top condition mechanically imo.

i’m stuck in a bit of a trap making the same boring urban scenes and i kinda want to break out of that somehow

to paraphrase a conversation i was having elsewhere: how the fuck do you get better at making art like i can operate nearly any contraption with some level of competence by now but my photos are still shit

view down shadowed street, one person in middle distance, a few more far away. sunlight catches the curved front of a building ahead, reflecting wavy paths of light that scatter towards the camera

oh hell yeah, i just got the negatives back and it’s fully functional!!

These are pretty much exactly the same reasons I got an M4 back when I was using the M system. As much of a Barnack nerd as I am, I kind of regret selling that one.

- The Q2M seems to preserve highlights much better while also capturing more than enough shadow detail.

claire @protosphere.me · 14/09/2026
Some more comparisons: - Leica FOTOS is actually good, especially in comparison to Fujifilm XApp. Connecting works, and is fast, as are downloads. XApp fails to connect for me quite a bit and takes ages to download a photo.

I think it’s probably more of a camera to have alongside the 100RF rather than instead of it, but that’s much less affordable
010
claire @protosphere.me · 12/09/2026
So after doing some comparisons it basically comes down to, do I want the ✨bokeh✨/low light performance of the Q2M or the resolution of the GFX100RF. I think I’m leaning towards the latter. Both have very similar dynamic range.

Q2M snapshots
0150
claire @protosphere.me · 12/09/2026
Yeah I will say that 28mm is not ideal for me, hence the hesitation (although the 100RF is a 28mm equivalent too, but you have more room for cropping).
010
claire @protosphere.me · 12/09/2026
Yes it’s 50 MP instead of 102 MP, but having a dedicated monochrome sensor is cool
230
claire @protosphere.me · 12/09/2026
Vaguely considering trading my GFX100RF for it, and getting some store credit as leftover. I’m shooting B&W on the 100RF like 99% of the time anyway, and the faster lens on the Q2 Monochrom is nice to have.

claire @protosphere.me · 12/09/2026

based on www.photrio.com/forum/thread... i’m gonna say that cleaning the blades and reassembling is above my skill level, so off to the repair guy it goes i guess
110
claire @protosphere.me · 11/09/2026
now, do I bank on being able to do this myself, or do I consign the shutter to 8 weeks of waiting with the local repair guy
110
claire @protosphere.me · 11/09/2026
yeah i can see something on one of the blades, it has likely spread to the inside where i can’t see it
100
claire @protosphere.me · 11/09/2026
i guess some dust got lodged in the blades somewhere. do i now have to take it apart *again* to clean the blades lmao
210
claire @protosphere.me · 11/09/2026
now the blades sometimes stick when opening on the fast speeds. this was a mistake
