Daily Diary Comix! It's soup season, baby! The bonus of getting the garden in late is that my tomatoes are still going strong.

It's soup season! My garden went in late, and had a rough start between rabbits and weather... but it's October, and I'm getting one helluva harvest from my tomato army.

Coincidentally enough, my strongest tomatoes are Adora Tomatoes - an Aldi offering that I bought due to it sharing a name with my beloved cat - whose seeds I have saved and grown for two years now.

I really enjoy freestyling sheet pan soups - just roast veggies of choice and blend at the end - adding whatever liquid of choice to thin things out.

Butternut Sheet Pan Soup
------------------------------
2 halved butternut squash
1 quartered sweet onion
1 garlic bulb
1 quartered red bell pepper
2 golden yukon potatoes
1/2 bag baby carrots
3 adora tomatoes
rosemary
salt
olive oil

Bake at 400 for 50 minutes.

2c soup stock (I used chicken)
1c heavy cream
1/4 c parmesan cheese

Blend in blender or in pot with immersion blender - serve with splash of heavy cream and shredded parmesan garnish.

Tonight I'm roasting several tomatoes for a creamy soup. I always like throwing in a potato or two for the starch thickening.

Daily? Diary Comix: I spent my birthday fighting pipe leaks. Thankfully my Midwest Avenger brother showed up and helped - the pipes had to get CUT for full repairs - I wasn't DIY that job.

Yesterday was my 40th birthday - thankfully my brother was a Midwest Avenger and helped me with the sink issue! It ended up needing significantly more cutting, and new faucet pieces than I expected.

A very stressful day! Today was significantly better, largely due to not having to worry about water seeping through my kitchen floor down into the laundry room!

...we also took a family hike and I got to see a tree frog and a garter snake.

Daily Diary Comix! - It's that time of year again! I'm almost relieved that it was e-coli water...? Because it means we know what to fight! ...still currently sick though.

I've always been pretty sickly. It's really annoying - weather and seasonal changes dramatically affect my body. Fall/winter are especially heavy hitters on me - the drop in temperature really fucks up my joints.

...so it didn't raise any alarm bells when I was sick this month. Not at first. I pushed myself extremely hard during the final weeks of August, and then with the house fire...? I thought it was stress and seasonal colds converging.

...then my city announced that they found e-coli in the water supply. In the lead up to this discovery I had stopped drinking water. Something tasted off - I was deep cleaning my cups, the ice dispenser, etc. The biggest tell should've been that the mouse and one of our dogs was also becoming very hesitant to drink the water.

I spent a few weeks getting repeat infections, and my care team was at a loss as to what was happening. Once I got the e-coli notice we ran some tests and it confirmed it.

...the night the water contamination was announced I had taken a long bath while drinking a TON of water...

My family is on the mend now - but I'm sad that I lost another month to sickness.

Here's hoping that October will be wonderful! It will be busy, and I'm so excited.

Yep! I’ve been sitting here with my care team trying to figure out why I’m getting back to back infections - running so many tests. I’m so annoyed - I thought it was just stress from the house fire.

Well - at least I know a potential reason that my family has been aggressively sick: My town’s water supply has e-coli. Spent the day getting some potable water and informing my care team.

This is Fat Gus. He’s a biter - not hand tamed at all, but I respect it. He’s a hard working guy - I’m merely the caretaker (I love those pink raspberry eyes though! Huge charm point)

A fancy mouse - buff and white in color with pink eyes.

Also: Rat Tax! I’ll be caring for the sorority for another week or two. They’re total sweeties, but lil eye stripe there is super mouthy/bitey, so I’m going slower with her. She’s younger with a BOLD personality.

This is one of the younger rats and the only sweetie with beautiful raspberry eyes. The younger three are named after the powerpuff girls, but I don’t know who is who. I got her with the flash on accident!

Daily Diary Comix! - Somewhere I think part of me was left in the week of August 21st. Too much has happened since then. Somehow it's already September 20th??

It's been a very busy month. As all things are with balance, there were extremely awesome things, and also complete devastation.

--

I become someone else during emergencies. All emotion and anxiety drop away and the path before me becomes crystal clear. There is never any doubt - only action.

The fire was last Friday. The moment I realized what house was on fire I was already on my way with several leashes and harnesses draped over my arm - asking my kid which pets were in which rooms. I'm so proud of that kid - she spoke directly with the Sheriff and a Firefighter and explained where the pets were.

Then we waited.

We held our neighbors when they arrived, and we stayed. A few hours in I watched a bat fly from the attic area - it gave me some hope in spite of all of the smoke.

It was shocking when they pulled the rabbits out - 3 made it. Then the rats - a MASSIVE shout out to the firefighters for not understanding pet rodents, but still checking and saving them.

It sure has been a 24 hours! I haven’t slept much - a close family friend’s house burned down. No human was harmed, but their dogs and cats didn’t make it. gofund.me/523d4f787 Miraculously there were survivors! I’m currently housing their rats and a mouse.

Daily Diary Comix: @mncbaorg.bsky.social 's Fallcon was my 1st ever con in 2010! A coworker suggested it when he found out I liked comics, and also gave me the push to make my own. October 2010 was my debut - it really is an amazing little con! Also attached my first table when I was just 23.

Daily Diary Comics (backlog) - I did manage to get a second job! I only lasted a week before aura vision started kicking in, and I found out that I'm severely overworking myself. I just can't handle 13+ hour days like I used to. My glasses are on order, and my eyes look health at least.

Daily Diary Comix - now in color I'm currently finding a process that works for me - and it's messy and honestly foregoes a lot of traditional writing. I think very visually and tend to choke on writing.

I'm finding out that a lot of my limits are that I learn by watching others, and sometimes I get caught completely in their process. I focus more on perfecting that process instead of just doing the damn thing!

The last time I did a 38 page comic was 2010. It was my first (and only) full length comic. I followed 'process' to the absolute letter, and then ran far, FAR away from comics.

But I love comics so much! So I kept butting my head up against process, and just... burning out. I've been coaxing myself away from the process, and just making the damn thing. I'm learning a LOT about myself and what I enjoy doing in the process. Right now I'm having a ton of fun!

The original process:
Write down story / design characters
Thumbnail scenes and adjust for page count
ink/letter/etc
Finished comic

Current process:
draw a character - love her enough to make her a story
-rough gist of story
-cool, what locations do you need to make that happen?
-what characters do you need to make this happen?
--map of the area

Writing is intimidating, and I think very visually, so let's see how far this process can take me
