How do proteins localize in bacteria? Usually by binding to a prelocalized protein-but how does that protein localize? @vanipande.bsky.social found a #Bacillus subtilis protein that localizes via a lipid cue, undecaprenyl phosphate, that guides it to sites of PG synthesis www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Biofilm formation in #Bacillus subtilis is thought to precede sporulation, but T. Updegrove says that a subpopulation of sporulating cells triggers other cells to become biofilm formers via an intracellular metabolite (glycerol) repurposed as a signaling molecule (!) www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Biofilm formation and sporulation aren't sequential - they branch. In our new paper w/ @ramamurthilab.bsky.social , we show how sporulating B. subtilis repurposes glycerol as a morphogen to coordinate multicellular development: www.science.org/doi/full/10....
