Malcolm Rifkind is right, the Conservative tradition has always been strongest when it has combined shared values with room for serious debate. A successful political party should be united by common principles, not require agreement with every individual policy. www.thetimes.com/comment/colu...

The Tories’ new candidate policy is anti-conservative
The party has always seen itself as a broad church but now respected members such as Grant Shapps are being turned away

Small announcements can still make a real difference. But they need to add up to something bigger, a clear plan for growth. Backing business, investment, innovation and the private sector should be at the heart of the new PMs plan.

Kemi Badenoch is right to seek candidates with serious experience beyond Westminster. But the Party must remain a broad church. Requiring agreement on every major issue risks shutting out talented people, narrowing the party’s appeal & making it harder to build the coalition needed to govern.

A packed town hall in Guildford. A business roundtable with local SMEs and employers. Real conversations about what is holding growth back. This is what taking politics beyond Westminster means: listening first, then building serious policy around the real barriers people face.

The question is not whether we refight the referendum. The question is how the UK works with its closest allies and most important trading partner in a more dangerous world. Help shape our policy work on the UK’s relationship with the EU. www.prosperuk.com/britain_s_fu...

Ten years on from the EU referendum, the UK needs a practical debate about Europe. But not another referendum argument. Instead a serious look at how we improve trade, support growth and work with our nearest neighbours in the national interest. Have your say: www.prosperuk.com/britain_s_fu...

Welfare spending needs to be brought under control Health & disability spending is rising rapidly. The triple lock is uncertain, unpredictable & increasingly expensive A sustainable welfare system means lower pressure for future tax rises, room to invest in growth, & stronger incentives for work

Pension reform does not mean cutting pensions. A smoothed earnings link would keep pensions rising, protect pensioners in high-inflation years, and avoid permanently locking in exceptional cost spikes. That is a fairer settlement between generations. www.prosperuk.com/a_fairer_wel...

A smoothed earnings link would protect pensioners when inflation rises faster than wages. But it would then return the state pension to an earnings-based path. That means protection for pensioners, greater certainty for taxpayers, and a more sustainable system over time.

The time is right to move on from the triple lock. It is uncertain, unpredictable and expensive. A smoothed earnings link would protect pensioners from inflation, make the system fairer, and free up more money for priorities like defence.

Farage said he would wipe out the Tories. He hasn’t. But it’s clear from early results, the Conservative coalition of 2019 can't be rebuilt because Reform is not going away. The route back is something akin to the 2015 coalition built on trust on the economy and a pro business approach.

The Mandelson and Matthew Doyle scandal shows once again Westminster is a system that too often looks like “jobs for the boys” - not what you know, but who you know. If we want to raise standards in public life, politics has to open up and be based on merit, not networks.
