A snippet/sneak peek of vol.2 of THE VILE DEED, which was mailed a few weeks ago. Spoilers: I am not a professional product photographer.

A short written preview of the VILE DEED, chapter two text:

"‘I’ll keep watch,’ I told Naius when he had laid down. ‘I don’t trust him.’ Never mind that the old Monk had disappeared promptly to a cot behind a curtain and had begun to snore soundly before we had so much as dressed our beds.
‘You’ll be tired in the morning.’
‘I won’t.’
‘Keep sharp then, if you mean to stay up,’ he said, though I knew he was only humoring me.
Then he went to sleep. After a short while, it was as if I were alone there in the dormitory with only Naius’ brother's sword in my bed for company. No moonlight fell there; once I blew out the lamp beside us, only darkness lingered. Eventually, the old monk’s breathing lowered. It seemed to stop completely, and then to saw again, and then to go quiet again all in a rhythm like the soft thumping of my spirit inside me.
I waited, as one does, for a ghost.
I imagined him coming across the tired garden plot and shuffling, brittle, through the room where the skete’s monks had once supped together in fellowship and now lay empty. If he meant to appear then I knew he must arrive by standing in the doorway, that blacker patch of air beyond the curtain of the farthest unused cell. I looked into it for as long as I was able.
Slowly, I believe I saw him there.
He was a shape in the dark. He was the chalk taste of dust on the air.
‘Go home,’ I whispered. ‘You’ve done your duty. There’s no work for you here.’"

It's been a few weeks since I mailed chapter one so I feel like I can safely post process pics/excerpts from vol.1 of the '26 zine without thoroughly spoiling it. Thanks for experimenting with me~! Really thoroughly charmed by how encouraging everyone's been.

An excerpt from chapter one of THE VILE DEED: "When April comes, she brings her stick. Every house is opened, every square of linen beaten clean, every furrow dug. Meat fattens on winter's bone as brome grass swells to fill the meadow. Here is the time for the birds to flutter in their bowers, and for good animals to be led to each other, and for all seed to be laid. Let every window be opened. Let every sheet be turned. Let the daylight come back into the places that forgot it and lie about on the sills and on the floors like the great red banded tom I knew he, Naius, loved.

Naturally, this is the customary time when men such as we must travel.

So it was that in that season, he and I put on our good clothes—he in his robe and fine scapular too care-fully made for walking in, and I with the sword I was told his brother had wished on his deathbed would be mine—, and set off on horses gifted to the abbot with the intention that he would hand them to down us for this very purpose.

Do you know how long the road to Domehrin is? No, neither do I. As any man in my place should do, I have studied the way to Hrotir and could stand before you and recite the twelve stations that sit between the abbey yard and the old heart of the world. I could name their keepers. I know which limbs must be gathered and where the fine delicate things that should be used for our appeal are expected to grow about them. But that place, Hrotir, is empty now. Burned and vacated. As all things grow back differently in the spring once they've been winter cut, now the nose of every horse in the world finds itself turned in a new direction. Now there is the new road, and it is unfamiliar to me.

But what of those holy places? Those way-markers? Those martyr stones? What of the stripling trees grown only to be shorn in kindly service to their shrines? What of the bones meant to witness us, and their faithful neighbors who would have dug them up out of good clay known to redden as it neared [...]"
