Tina dying was shocking, but it's significant that Angel didn't save her life, that he failed. Buffy's journey was about growing up and embracing her power. Much like a recovering alcoholic, Angel's journey is about restraining himself from his darker urges. Doyle pointed out that in isolating himself from people, Angel was at risk of losing his humanity. Angel finding his humanity in his grief and rage over Tina's death was a great scene to establish who Angel is as a character. Cordelia is not naive. She knew what the invitation to Russell's house meant, but she was so desperate and broken down by L.A. that she went anyway & tried to stay positive about it.
