Our #ENVClub hosted a black light bug party last night. We saw lots of different critters. Thanks to special guest Steve Malan, our adjunct entomologist, to tell us a bit about what we were seeing. And thanks to Brett for handling the logistics. I think this was a success!

Testing our new Song Meter Micro 2 from @wildlifeacoustics.com and analyzing the recordings with BirdNET Analyzer. It recorded at sunrise & sunset (20 min ea) for 1 week. Six to 130 calls of 1 to 10 species were ID'ed per session for a total of 19 species over the week. #bioacoustics #Ecology

Second meeting of our #TreeClimbingClub this semester. Reviewed basic safety, line setting, MRS using the Blake's hitch, and footlocking, then introduced the hitch climber system. 3 additional climbers not pictured here💪🏻 Now practice those knots & hitches! Thanks for the pictures, Brett!

Just finished this as I listen to a chorus of crickets, would recommend. And it's timely too given that I recently purchased several Song Meters for my Ecology lab. I found the underlying theme that bioacoustics research has helped confirm indigenous knowledge really interesting. #bookclub

Property owners: take care of your trees. Consult an ISA certified arborist. Ask for options. If the tree isn't an obvious hazard and they immediately suggest removal, thank them for their time and find a different arborist.

Another sad neighborhood tree removal: a large, seemingly healthy oak and its 70+ years gone. The tree needed a good pruning, not removal. We need more large, mature trees in our neighborhoods, not fewer.

Time to collect SD cards from our #Arboreal canopy trail cameras this afternoon. Will head back tomorrow to replace one of the cameras. We've got 4 cameras at different heights in each of two red oaks, trying to see who's using the trees when we're not around.
Where in the tree is Brett?

Earlier this week, a little workout and procrastination of semester prep to practice tree climbing with different MRS techniques. How bad is the procrastination? Today I'm cleaning my office.
Blake's hitch. Not a big fan, despite simplicity. But I suspect that this hitch doesn't work well with this particular rope, can't get it to hold weight for long, so need to try different ropes.
(ps. I know this isn't tied quite right, obviously need to try again)Hitch climber system with distel hitch. Works fine, but I struggle to keep knot at rope's end out of the hitch's way (hence the long loop with the figure 8)split tail system with prusik hitch and self-tending pulley. My preference for MRS (though it is also what I started with and have used the most for MRS), but much prefer SRS over MRS

It seems an increasing percentage of students approach education transactionally, seeking the "easiest" path to good grades while sacrificing learning & personal growth. Lack of genuine engagement with course material means poorer understanding of course concepts, which surprises no one.

Of course we're hearing a lot about A.I. as we prepare for the semester. This study mirrors data collected over several years in the course that I teach most often. Online quiz & homework scores have steadily increased while exam scores continue a downward trajectory. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....
figure from linked article: students using gAI have decreasing exam scores as homework scores increase while students not using gAI have increase exam scores while homework scores increase. The included time to complete the homework suggests that this pattern isn't as much about using gAI but time engaged with the material (students using gAI spend less time on homework)figure from linked article: students using gAI spend less time on homework and have poorer exam scores
