The Target of Rapamycin Complex (TORC), comprising TOR and the accessory subunits RAPTOR (REGULATORY-ASSOCIATED PROTEIN OF TOR) and LST8 (LETHAL WITH SEC THIRTEEN PROTEIN 8), functions as a central regulatory hub that integrates environmental cues, such as light, with internal signals, including hormonal and energy status. TOR promotes growth under favorable conditions, but must be down-regulated during stress, such as pathogen attack, to redirect energy toward defense mechanisms. Light is a key environmental signal that stimulates photosynthesis, leading to increased energy production and sugar accumulation, both of which activate TOR signaling. As a central energy sensor, TOR is also closely linked to the circadian clock, regulating essential metabolic processes in a time-of-day-dependent manner.

The central role of redox status in modulating plant function. Oxidants and reductants produced in different compartments can transmit developmental and environmental signalling that leads to changes at multiple levels, ultimately modulating gene expression to drive plant responses to a fluctuating and frequently challenging environment. Among the panoply of redox factors existing in the cell, superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, nitric oxide, and glutathione are some of those given consideration in this issue.
