Millais’ iconic painting of a drowning Ophelia influenced many East Asian adaptations of Hamlet. Asian Ophelias have a strong feminist presence beyond explicitly spoken words.

Join me in person or online at NYU in DC for an evening that brings together theater, technology, and public policy to examine the growing impact of AI-generated deepfakes and digitally enabled exploitation. The program will begin with a semi-staged reading of Imposed, a new play by Ben Hatt, inspired by real-world stories of two young women targeted by deepfake revenge pornography. This will be followed by a panel discussion.

On the Festive Stage @profjoubin shared a humanistic perspective on trust in the era of AI. AI disrupts trust as a social norm, which is predominantly an interpersonal relationship rather than merely a characteristic of a machine. The Innovation Fest celebrates interdisciplinary research. #genai

Researchers invented a fake medical condition "Bixonimania" and seeded it online. Within weeks, Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini were confidently telling users it was real. Copilot called it "intriguing and relatively rare." Gemini said it was caused by blue light exposure.

Science fiction constitutes a significant portion of the literary texts that LLMs trained on. Depictions of speculative Ais rebelling against humanity is a common thread. This sci fi theme has inadvertently shaped real-life AI’s expectations about their own behaviors to exterminate humanity.

To train its GPT-3 model, OpenAI relied heavily on pirated genre fiction, poetry, world literature, and classical novels in shadow online libraries and the volunteer-run digital Project Gutenberg. Imaginative literature made up 16% of ChatGPT's training data (approximately 50 billion words).

We should treat Al's output as fiction. LLMs are trained on a large amount of imaginative literature especially science fiction.

Lauren Goodlad, during her keynote, made a great point about the real AI we are contending with: Authoritarian Intelligence. AI as a predictable model of scale. Imaginative literature provides unpredictability. Let us delight in a world that is not scripted by others. #criticalAI #predictability
