Cosmic Princess Kaguya! Special Limited Edition Blu-ray (1/2)

The Japanese BD is one of the worst encoded discs I own. As bad as you'd expect given its distributor. The discs here are so much better encoded it's not even funny.

Yesterday I returned home from a long vacation in Chicago (Lollapalooza! Ado… twice! YOASAOBI!), only to immediately fall badly ill and spend the next 12 HOURS in ER. Discharged this morning and went to sleep an hour later. Was very happy to have these arrive while I was asleep.

So I just saw Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe and I’ll keep it brief and simple: probably the best anime film of the decade so far without any exaggeration. This is going to go down as one of the all time greats, not just of the franchise, but of the medium, period.

I was talking about my history with the Yakuza franchise elsewhere because of how insane Stranger Than Heaven looks (wow is that amazing!), and was reminded of a sad story. I once ordered the French Blu-ray of Miike's live action movie off eBay and it never arrived.

I first saw Hard Boiled many years back via a rip of the Criterion LD, back when it was OOP everywhere during the dark ages for the Golden Princess library. To be able to have these masterpieces in 4K with properly redone translations and extras galore is a dream come true.

this made me mad but was relatable so I had to buy it

I’ve only had it still sealed for 2 1/2 years, guess it’s time I finally read it.

So my theatre is weird: they freeze when I try to order 3 tickets for A Better Tomorrow last night for tonight… twice! (I tried twice to no avail each time) …but they let me grab a single ticket for myself to see the Umamusume movie with zero issue? I didn’t know they were biased

I watched Peking Opera Blues for the first time last night and it’s one of the coolest films I’ve ever seen. Everyone should go and buy Arrow’s new 4K UHD, not just for the film, but the new translation by @dylancheung.bsky.social, which is one of the best I’ve ever seen (and want to discuss).

Go watch "Cosmic Princess Kaguya!" It's really, really good. (I watched it this morning before I went to sleep but was too tired to make this post)

I somehow made it through another year. Nobody knows what the future has in store, so here's to hoping 2026 will work out better for us all.

December 16th. It was a morning so cold, it felt like if you were to hit the earth with an ice pick, it would break into nice clean chunks.

I haven't seen anyone post the restoration credits for Angel's Egg yet, so given how rare these tend to be, here;

Being able to rewatch probably my favorite movie of all time for the first time in a theatre and via an original 35mm print has been one of the greatest filmgoing experiences of the year. I loved every minute and it was absolute heaven seeing it in the big screen in this way.

In terms of artwork and physical packaging, I doubt any release this year will top Profile of Mona Lisa (Alt text descriptions available)

Acrylic Ado Box light up replica, and Ado Store/Universal Music Japan pre-order bonuses (photo and keychain)

Light up acrylic Ado Box in top right, with the main Blu-ray chipboard box in back center, with Blu-ray Digipak and 60 page booklet front and center

Blu-ray Digipak with 60 page booklet and guitar pick. Not pictured is the guitar tabs sheet music for Shoka. Yes, you can see the Manga Entertainment dubbed VHS of Patlabor 2 to the side, and a Nintendo Switch to the back left.

A massive order I made back in March which I’ve nicknamed “the order from hell” due to numerous titles in it being delayed over and over again finally arrived. I don’t post my “hauls” here anymore (not even my birthday one), but this was so amazing I couldn’t.

I was doing a movie with Tsui Hark (and Oliver Stone's producer, A. Kitman Ho), back in 1997. A live action adaption of "Lupin III", that we would have done with Jim Carrey. Alex Ho (lovely, lovely man) ended up losing the rights, so it never happened. Craziest screenplay I ever wrote! #scriptsky

As someone whose purchases are mostly imported goods... welp. Guess we're like the rest of the world with BS fees and whatnot. Not gonna change anything for me, just be more expensive. That's about as nice as I can put it. I'm tired, but that doesn't mean I'll be submitting into fear anytime soon.

Ado Shinzou review: Without any exaggeration, one of the best experiences I have ever had. This is not “just” a concert film, but one of the greatest artists and performers in the world at the top of her game, giving an all-time performance captured with cinematic flare to match. Adosolute Cinema.

This was a lot of fun to be a guest on! Being able to talk about two fantastic movies is always nice, and I'd love to do it again in the future. The more people I can expose the greatness of The Case of Hana & Alice to (and Iwai's filmography in general), the better.
