Happiest of birthdays to Wolf, and to @annelouiseavery.bsky.social, who brings us tales Wolf, Old Fox and their world of quiet kindness, compassion, companionship, love and gentle magic. Today is a very good day to join Anne's patreon. [White Wolf by Patrice Murciano]

During the long 1754 election campaign, Lady Susan Keck laughingly told her nephew that her campaigning had brought her to unusual biscuit prominence: 'I am now a woman of the utmost consequence and I am sold in Gingerbread in all the fairs.' [HMC Hamilton (suppl.), 176-7]

Happy Easter weekend to all who celebrate! A time to talk, laugh & reminisce. Cook together, eat favourite foods & savour companionship. If you are on your own, rest, relax, cook, read good books, watch favourite films, walk in the sun or rain. Ivan Marchuk, 'Awakening' (1992)
A symbolic image by Marchuk: the face of a serene woman with her forehead banded by a delicate band
of Ukrainian blue and yellow, emerges from a complex woven golden background, dotted with poppies.

Yes, it's still in MS. This is the page of the diary. The diarist is 12 year old Betsey Wynne. Fortunately Prof Susan Dalton (@susandalton.bsky.social) has been able to point me to a publication that answered my question.
Page of 12 yr old Betsey Wynne's diary for Venice, 2-3 Feb. 1791. My initial question was for information about what the 'Fresco' was, which is mentioned in these lines of the 2 Feb. entry: 'Nous allames aux Fresco dans le Battellon de l'Ambassadeur ... Le Fresco fut superb il y avoit 3 battaux de Masques ainsi que la Peote du Comte d'Artois qui etoit bien belle.'

Mary (née Bright), Marchioness of Rockingham (1735-1804). Burke told her to preserve her papers: "Your Names indeed ought to go down together; for it is no mean part you have had in the great services which that great and good man has done to his Country." (portait at Muncaster Castle)
3/4 length portrait of Mary, Marchioness of Rockingham, in a gilt wood frame; she stands on an angle, looking out at the viewer; a view of a slight, young woman with light brown hair, wearing an elegant mid-18C gown, trimmed with blue bows and lace

Yesterday's appalling ambush of Zelenskyy by Trump and Vance - absolutely shocking behaviour and treatment of another world leader, and yet Trump's comment said it all ... 'this is going to be great television' ... #StandWithUkraine

UK - European statement in support of Ukraine, posted on Twitter/X by David Lammy
We are ready to enhance our support for Ukraine. We commit to its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russia's war of aggression.

We share the goal to keep supporting Ukraine until a just, comprehensive and lasting peace is reached. A peace that guarantees the interest of Ukraine and our own.

We are looking forward to discussing the way ahead together with our American allies. Our shared objectives should be to put Ukraine in a position of strength. Ukraine and Europe must be part of any negoations. Ukraine shold be provided with strong security guarantees. A just and lasting peace in Ukraine is a necessary condition for a strong transatlantic security.

We recall that the security of the European continent is our common responsibility. We are therefore working together to strengthen our collective defense capabilities.

So worried for #Ukraine, after enduring unprovoked violence fr Russia for 3 years. Ukrainians have fought fiercely, w enormous determination & intelligence. Zelenskyy an incredible advocate, speaking daily to the world. Trump must not be allowed to surrender Ukraine's sovereignty.

The arguments vs women being able to sit in parlt were numerous in the #C18th #C19th; they often rested on a belief that men wouldn't be able to resist women's sexual allure. An example from Egerton Smith, editor of the Liverpool Mercury (from c.1834), which may make Rachel Reeves smile.

Both here and Threads seem not to be plagued with the twits, racists & bots of Twitter, but it is frustrating to run multiple sites in order to keep up with those I followed previously on only one site. As it's #Caturday, here's our little tripod, Bridie, terror of rodents & lover of cheese.

A bit of historical exploring yesterday afternoon to take a good look at the centre of nearby Bridgwater - such impressive architecture - was very sorry to see some of the lovely houses built by duke of Chandos in the early 18C on Castle Street with broken windows & boarded up.

Simply shocked - even though my opinion of Johnson & co.'s callousness & incompetence was already rock bottom - that protecting the economy came before protecting the elderly & the vulnerable. #Covidinquiry
