Informative blog on trends in LNG tanker construction, suggesting an over supply of tankers in the future? Also cool picture of first LNG tanker ever built, the Methane Princess in 1964. blog.datadesk.eco/p/too-many-s...

I was delighted to be one of several Cornell faculty members honored last night at Guru Vandana event hosted by Cornell's Hindu student community. Wonderful dancing, inspiring talks, great food, all in appreciation of teachers (gurus). An ancient tradition.

If you are in Ithaca, consider coming to my talk on Tuesday (4/14) at 3:30 pm: "Methane and the Shale Gas Revolution: Science, Policy, and Politics," sponsored by the Dept of Natural Resources & Environment at Cornell, basement lecture room in Fernow Hall.

15 years ago today, Tony Ingraffea, Renee Santoro & I published the first paper to challenge the idea of fracked shale gas as a "bridge fuel," because of potentially high methane emissions. Our conclusions have held up quite well! The paper is available here: link.springer.com/article/10.1...

GWP20 for methane greenhouse-gas accounting is good policy in NY State & beyond, as Mark Jacobson and I explain in a response to a recent criticism by Zeke Hausfather. First paragraph of our statement is shown below. Full statement is here: howarthlab.org/GWP20 @mzjacobson.bsky.social

Check out our new paper published today: "Atmospheric Ammonia Deposition: A Significant Source of N to an Oligotrophic Lake & it's Watershed." JGR Biogeosciences. The ammonia is from ag sources & may contribute to blooms of toxic cyanobacteria ("HABs"). dx.doi.org/10.1029/2025...
Gaseous ammonia inputs from agricultural sources are significant input of nitrogen to an oligotrophic lake in the NY Finger Lakes region, potentially contributing to blooms of toxic cyanobacteria.

See this table from my paper, which compares LNG with diesel oil and with coal, showing details for CO2 and methane emissions. For further detail, go to the actual paper scijournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

Pleased to learn that my paper on the greenhouse gas footprint of LNG is one of the top 10 most cited papers in Energy Science & Engineering in 2024. The paper is available here: scijournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... #TopCitedArticle

Hausfather's recent blog said methane's influence was only for 10 years, that of CO2 10,000 years. That's a huge exaggeration. A pulse of methane has real climate impacts for 40+ years, and those from CO2 are declining by 20% after 100 years. Figure below is based on IPCC 2013.

I & 66 other scientists & engineers sent a letter to NY Governor Hochul & other leaders in NY on March 7, urging that no changes be made to the greeenhouse gas accounting methodology in NY's progressive climate law. Below is my cover email. Link to the letter: www.politico.com/f/?id=000001...

Increase in methane emissions from fossil fuels has been underestimated. Our new PNAS paper just published today: www.pnas.org/doi/epub/10....

I was pleased to speak to Sen. Ed Markey & others yesterday at meeting on LNG sponsored by the US Senate Climate Task Force, co-chaired by Markey and Sen. Whitehouse. Skepticism about LNG exports from the US is growing, because of the huge climate impact and the large economic cost to US consumers.

Took this picture from my porch yesterday afternoon. Young bald eagle spent the better part of an hour on this perch overlooking our yard.

US banned LNG exports until 2016 but is now largest LNG exporter in the world. Growth in LNG is fueled by the shale-gas boom.
