Painting makes me miss my grandmother most so here is her favorite painting tip. Always keep large ziplock bags in your paint supplies. Don’t buy the small paint pail liners- put a Ziploc bag in it and finish small projects later without your paint drying out.

My kids (born in ‘95 & ‘06) grew up in ACVWs and going to ACVW meetups and “cruises”. The youngest son had a Herbie themed birthday party with a guest appearance by my friend’s Herbie replica. It remains one of my absolute favorite parenting memories now that they’re all grown up. 🥰

My dad and I once had a disagreement over him using the adage

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."

I said, "That's just not true. Sometimes what doesn't kill you leaves you brittle and injured or traumatized."

He stopped and thought about that for a while. He came back later, and said, "It's like wood glue."

He pointed to my bookshelf, which he helped me salvage a while ago.

He said, "Do you remember how I explained that, once we used the wood glue on them, the shelves would actually be stronger than they were before they broke?"

I did.

"But before we used the wood glue, those shelves were broken.

They couldn't hold up shit. If you had put books on them, they would have collapsed. And that wood glue had to set awhile. If we put anything on them too early, they would have collapsed just the same as if we'd never fixed them at all. You've got to give these things time to set."

It sounded like a pretty good metaphor to me, but one thing I did pick up on was that whatever broke those shelves, that's not the thing that made them stronger. That just broke them. It was being fixed that made them stronger. It was the glue.

So my dad and I agreed, what doesn't kill you doesn't actually make you stronger, but healing does. And if you feel like healing hasn't made you stronger than you were before, you're probably not done healing.

You've got to give these things time to set.

Years later, Larry Hardy of In the Red Records spotted a box at Poison Ivy’s house. Inside was the abandoned project: Gravest Gravy. Rollins & MacKaye carefully listened through every take and mix to determine what belonged on the final album. I'm listening to it now & it is INCREDIBLE. 7/11

Except they didn’t. Ivy, Lux, & Chilton mixed the recordings in 1989 & in '08 planned to release them as their final album—a return to the beginning. They chose the title & cover. When Lux died in '09 the project was shelved again. Most of the Cramps music/merch you find now is bootlegged. 6/11

Like…as a child it’s not your responsibility to look after yourself, adults around you should have been looking after you and ensuring you were being fed appropriately. She was failed by so many people around her yet she’s still blaming herself for “her mistake”. It’s heartbreaking to see it.

The museum has been there for a while, they’re just expanding! There are a few great books on the museum & the history of Ferris University allowing Black men AND women to enroll at Ferris State University LONG before other universities were integrating or allowing women to enroll.

They came to enroll in college programs and college preparatory courses— and to escape, if only temporarily, the daily and ubiquitous indignities suffered under the Jim Crow racial hierarchy. They excelled in
their studies and became accomplished in their professional fields. Many went on to both ignite and help lead the explosive civil rights movement. Very few people know their stories—-until now.
Haste to Rise is a book about the incredible resilience and breathtaking accomplishments of those students. Along the way we are introdueed to dozens of these Jim Crow-era students, including the first African American to win a case before the U.S. Supreme Court, Belford Lawson, the lead attorney in New Negro Alliance v. Sanitary Grocery Co. (1938), a landmark court battle that safeguarded the right to picket. We also meet one of Lawson's contemporaries, Percival L. Prattis, a pioneering journalist and influential newspaper executive. There is also an in-depth look into the life and work of the institute's founder, Woodbridge Nathan Ferris, a racial justice pioneer who created educational opportunities for women, international students, and African Americans.
