Fascinated by what change is and how it occurs. Using process philosophy and complexity to think about how we can better understand change in work, especially in education.

It's great to come across a book where someone is exploring the idea of processual complexity - the very same idea I've been laying with for the past four years.

The current wave of populism in the UK is in part about inequalities, but I think it is as much if not more due to the nostalgia of an aging population for a mythical time when everything was better. Populists sell them a picture of a time that never existed but which they identify with.

When you read about the process through which Finland created its current national curriculum, you realise what a poor, poor process we have in this country in comparison.

Looking at government decisions & policy it is apparent that we have a C19th structure using linear thinking which is wholly inadequate for a complex context which requires interdepartmental thinking. Our system of government and the political ecosystem which surrounds it is woefully out of date

'attempts at organizational change tend to be unsuccessful, not because actors fail to see that they are needed or important, but because they tend to fizzle out as the energy and commitment around a course of action is not re-created at successive presents.' Hernes (2014:169)

In a world that will eventually need to choose between barbarian and ecological socialism, there are some days when I can't help but think that we're heading towards barbarism!!

The more I listen to others talk about work, the more I'm convinced that a core problem is that if time - time linked to change, to workload, and to accountability. We need to fundamentally change our understanding of time in organisations or the problems we face will become evermore acute.

The English ITE review and accreditation kicked into action over two years ago, and I'm sure those involved in policy saw them as events. However, those events have triggered a whole tangle of ongoing processes which are still not wholly understood or complete - policy is processual.

@draimeequicks.bsky.social, Matt Barley and I have started writing our new book this week. A central jumping off pint is Ron Glatter's paper from 2006 where he argues that leadership interests need to be embedded in a consideration of organisation rather than being too self-referential.

Beginning to play with the idea of the 'Disassociative Educational Organisation ', based on the idea that organisations are made up of two parts 1) The Formal Organisation - that of manager-leaders focused on planned change and hence plans, dataveillance, performance management etc.

Try to watch Call My Bluff every Monday on BBC4. It's one way of remembering my Dad. When we were kids we'd watch it with him. As a linguist fluent in a range of languages it was obviously pure joy for him every week and his enthusiasm would rub off on us. Still love it.

Thinking about what a processual analysis of a Nobel would look like. Novels are essentially a tangled, emergent flow of experiences; tangles of different characters' experiences, tangles of past, present and future experiences and the art of the writer centres on how they create the tangles and the

Heraclitus reflects that we can never step into the same river twice - the flow of water makes the river ever different. We need to see organisational change more like this. Popular models often see change like a tap, something leaders can turn on and off. And when off, change doesn't occur.

Part of process philosophy is that all we have, all we are, is experience. When we think, reflect or talk it's essentially experience we are dealing with. Even books are only captured and stabilised networks of experience. Perhaps this is why we fear mental illnesses and mental decay so acutely.

Reading through some work on process-time, which is indexical to events, activities and experiences rather than clock-time, stresses how organisationally we see the world through our understanding of time. Is this why improvement plans tend to be constrained to a year (actually about 9 months)?

The masters sessions we've been having have been really interesting and reflective. I really do think that we need to rebalance in the research community - leadership is very important but it's embedded in organisation and governance. We need to reflect this complexity much more.

A major implication of process philosophy is that we can't study leadership as a 'thing' firstly it is a verb, so it should be a 'leading' research area, and secondly it makes no sense unless embedded explicitly within organisational structures as leading and organising flow through each other
