On Batman Day??? (Actually I was saying something not too dissimilar to my boyfriend this afternoon.)
A screenshot of a discord message which reads: "I finished it and am having some half baked thoughts about how in America it's only ok to show an Evil Business Guy if you also show a Good Business Guy like how it used to be for Christians." (It has a laugh react because at least my boyfriend thinks I'm funny.)

If Dr Grant can explain frog DNA making dinosaurs turn male to two kids in PG movie then it can't be that hard to tell your children some people are gay or trans. Just sayin.
A close up shot of Dr Grant as he explains that some of the dinosaurs may have spontaneously changed sex in order to reproduce.

My sick ass just looked away from the screen briefly, looked back, and went "hey I know this scene! I've seen this movie before!" Like yeah, man, you're watching it right now!

"Theodore, Jurassic Park is SOOTHING to you?" Well first of all I basically know the script by heart. Second of all, look at this calm, blue lighting.
A TV showing a frame from the opening scene of Jurassic Park, in which a desperate, grasping hand attempts to cling to safety shortly before being wrenched away by a velociraptor. It is lit (I believe) day for night, so quite blue.

I haven't been posting about this much here but I'm currently in glassblowing school (juuuuuuust starting out) and yesterday I made this sphere.
A clear tube of borosilicate glass with a small sphere at the end, held near the camera with the frameworking bench and its associated gear out of focus in the background.

My timeline has done something hilarious.
A screenshot of two bluesky posts side by side, posted a minute apart.

Maria Haskens: "I refuse to know anything about Mr Beast."

Maggie Tokuda-Hall: "From the bottom of my heart who is this man" (above a photo of a display of some blue food product featuring the horrid, smug visage of Mr Beast himself.)

I have gotten some DMs in the last ~week asking if I'm ok and if I'm taking care of myself. And, surprisingly, I'm holding up pretty well. I think that is 97% due to the support of my belovéd horror community pals, and 3% making myself an entire cake and going at it with a fork like an animal.
A chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and red decorative icing on a blue and white plate. There is a fork next to it, and it looks like some feral beast has carved a chunk out of one side using only that fork and his feral appetite......did I mention it's chocolate funfetti? I had no idea they made that.

I'm trying to talk my boyfriend into watching it also.
A discord screenshot of a message from Theo (me!) timestamped "yesterday at 8:50 PM." The text of the message reads: "You should watch Leverage. This guy is in it and he punches everyone."

Attached is a photo of a TV displaying a close shot of a handsome white man with long hair, glasses, and stubble (Elliot, for those who know).

Felt like showing off an old cross stitch of mine today for no reason.

Me: Oh this is fucked up. I'm obsessed. (2 episodes in)
Friend: it gets better/worse
Me: Yeah um. I finished it.
Friend: Thoughts (eyes emoji)
Me: I am going to start biting people

Ok I put this on insta (trying to use that more for school reasons) but for those who aren't following me there, behold: the ikea chocolate bunny.
A flat cardboard box labeled "VÅRKÄNSLA" in classic ikea style. Pictured on the box, the three componant parts and finished shape of a flatpack chocolate bunny. The contents of the box: the three flat, chocolate pieces that will build the rabbit, and the two-step instructions much like those you'd find in any ikea furniture box. The fully assembled chocolate rabbit, standing on a blue and white, floral dessert plate.

With all this AI talk, has anyone tried drawing for fun? You don't actually have to be good at it for it to be fun. I drew this in like ~5 minutes the other day and I was giggling the entire time. Just like....you can make art for fun? Fuck AI, werewolf bakers forever.

I had to hunt through my camera roll for this but that pigeon in the center has some of the prettiest pigeon coloration I've ever seen.
Four pigeons, two of which are fully visible. At the top right, a pigeon with a shiny great head is sitting. In the center, a pigeon with very interesting coloration (a lot of browns on the wings) is pecking at the ground.

Last but not least, the final step in my Imperial Radch binge earlier this year. This was my favorite of the lot, though I loved them all. The characters, the world, the struggle. So much discovery, self and other. Typing this is making me want to read it again but my copy is in NJ aaaaah.
The cover of Translation State by Ann Leckie. Colors fade from red to orange (left to right) then a stripe of teal fades in at the right. On the white circle at the bottom, a human silhouette in profile in black.

This book peeled my brain like an onion and I cried through like a third of it. If you love stories about memory, you'll love it. This was also my scariest audiobook experience to date, bar none. The audiobook is a work of art. It's going to hurt you cognitively and emotionally. Read it immediately.
The cover of There Is No Antimemetics Division by QNTM. The title is in white text taking up the whole cover space. Behind it, a massive stone monolith rises out of a foggy forest.

I was feral for this book. The worldbuilding was rich and effortless. The characters were fascinating, and complemented each other in evolving ways no matter how they changed. Horrifying and hungry, desperate and divine. Such spectacular sensory detail that as I type this I taste honey on my tongue.
The cover of The Starving Saints by Caitlin Starling. On a black background, a hooded figure holds an apiary plate with honeycomb and bees. Its hands are golden and its face is several faces in one. Behind its head, a golden sun.

My first (absolutely not last) novel by Alix E. Harrow. The richness of the prose had my heart in its fist from the opening lines, and the characters swept me up seconds later. I was a blissful wreck reading this. If I close my eyes I can see Eden. If I listen close I can smell the smoke.

If you know me, you know I am a Rachel Harrison fanboy. But this book is something really special. Complexly told and SO scary, also carrying out the trend of all her books going right for my jugular in particular. Deep and untidy analysis of who gets to control the narrative when things go wrong.
The cover of Play Nice by Rachel Harrison. On a textured, whiteish background, centered, a purple illustration of an old, dilapidated house. Wrapped around the house, is a black devil tail with dripping blood on its pointed tip.

I'm not sure there was anything that could have prepared me for this book. The writing was delicious, delirious, and every freak in its magnificent cast was linguistically adored. File under books I would chew on if I had a spare. File under books I would have a summer fling with if they'd have me.
The cover of Freakslaw by Jane Flett. On a teal background, yellow text. In the center, a yellow shape that looks like a yellow eye in magenta flames with a black ferris wheel for an iris. The perfect, magnificent logline reads: "Lock up your daughters, lasso your sons."

I read this in one day and it hurt. It was so good. It hurt so bad. This is cosmic horror and sci fi and a love story and it has so much humanity and desperation and wonder and humor and love, and love, and love. I had to clutch it to my chest and pace the kitchen crying for a bit after I finished.
The cover of Dear Stupid Penpal by Rascal Hartley. Mostly black, with text in the style of an old school computer. At the bottom, a figure sits in front of several monitors. From the monitors, a bright spot as communications travel away and into the vast blackness of space.

I had been anticipating this book for ages, and it did not disappoint. I have seldom been as stressed out by a book in my life. An absolute roller coaster of blood, sweat, gritted teeth, and knitting needles. A battle cry: love someone, make something, refuse to let the bastards get you down.
The cover of Crafting for Sinners by Jenny Kiefer. On a dark purple background, red and teal text that looks chalklike. In the center, a hand-crocheted pair of hands with rainbow nail polish are raised in prayer.

This book was horrifying, devastating, and necessary. It was a painful and riveting exploration of the surge of anti-Asian racism at the height of the COVID lockdown, as well as a stewpot of grief, personal and community wide. It also had the best on-page depiction of OCD I have ever seen.
The cover of Bat Eater and Other Names for Cora Zeng by Kylie Lee Baker. White text on a dark (black and teal) background. Centered, behind the text, a still life with a bat and flowers.

This book is longer than I typically gravitate toward, but no words were wasted. The writing here is staggeringly gorgeous (I listened to it, and had to keep repeating lines back) and the story was one gut punch after another. This book feels important and I felt...well...basically everything.

Nonfiction first. I started reading this on a whim, briefly wondered if it was too intense for me to handle at this point in time, and then was so glad I stuck with it. A complex analysis of Predator (the film) as well as a poignant exploration of what it means to be a man, for better and worse.
The cover of the book Predator: A Memoir, a Movie, an Obsession by Ander Monson. The text is white, and looks sci fi. The images are colorful shapes like jungle foliage, but with images of drawings of predators from the film Predator.

Ah yes, like one of my favorite comics.
A three panel comic, one panel on top and two smaller ones side by side below.

Text above the top panel reads "Write down ideas whenever they come to you!"

Top panel, tinted purple to indicate night time. A character is sitting in bed, obviously half asleep, scribbling something on a piece of paper. The digital clock in the background says 5am. The character says. "Just had such a good idea. Gotta write this down..."

Between the two panels, the text reads "The next morning" (between two small yellow suns on either side).

On the left, two hands are holding a piece of paper that reads "when the glove". On the right, the same character from panel one stares at the paper in vexation.

Typical Colorado sky.
I took a picture basically pointed directly up and it's blue. Just blue. Not a cloud in sight. It's a tiny bit lighter at the bottom of the frame than the top but tbh it's pretty much just a blue rectangle.
