🧪⚒️ Interesting: modelling of length of day changes suggests that primary coupling between core and mantle is mainly a gravitational torque (dense bits of core and mantle attracting each other) rather than mechanical drag at core-mantle boundary or interaction with geomagnetic field.

CHUI presented for the first time in Cyprus at THALASSA 2026! Frederick University showcased PRO‑Coast's Conservation & Human Use Index, with case studies from: 🏝️ Akamas Peninsula (Cyprus) 🏝️ Comino Island (Malta) 🔗 Explore CHUI: chui.pro-coast.eu #PROCoast #CHUI #HorizonEU #CoastalConservation
Panagiotis Georgiou of Frederick University delivered a compelling presentation that captured the full attention of the room. The audience – some of the region's top minds in marine science and coastal governance – listened with great interest as CHUI was introduced.

Why? Because CHUI fills a gap that many in the room had been struggling with: a single tool that looks at ecology, governance, and people – all together. 🤝

🌿 CHUI in Action

Using the Akamas Peninsula as a local example, Panagiotis showed how CHUI helps diagnose challenges like:

✅ Fragmented responsibilities among stakeholders
✅ Communities feeling excluded from decisions
✅ Tensions between conservation and local livelihoods
✅ Weak enforcement and visitor pressureCHUI assesses four key dimensions:

Natural Values & Ecosystem Services 🌱

Threats & Pressures ⚠️

Governance ⚖️

Social Perceptions 👥

🏝️ Real‑World Impact: Comino, Malta

The presentation also featured the Comino Island case study by our partners Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEM) . Despite its Natura 2000 status, Comino faces:

Overwhelming mass tourism

Weak enforcement and fragmented governance

Habitat degradation and marine disturbance

Through CHUI, FoEM was able to identify conflicts, integrate data, and prioritise actions – proving the tool's real‑world value. 💪

PRO-Coast Project: the Chamber of Economy of Montenegro, sharing the highlights from the recent sixth partner meeting of the PRO-COAST project in GLASNIK: For more information, visit www.komora.me.
PRO-Coast Project: Sixth Partner Meeting and Montenegro’s Pilot Case Study has a special issue in Glasnik Newletter which is distributed to all the members of the Chamber of Economy of Montenegro, sharing the highlights from the recent sixth partner meeting of the PRO-COAST project, held from 19 to 21 May 2026 in Valletta, Malta. This special monthly issue pinpointed the following:
"The event brought together the 20 partners from 14 European countries to discuss the ongoing evolution of the project and its key achievements.
A central theme of the meeting was the urgent need to balance the preservation of our seas, coastlines, and biodiversity with the sustainable development of tourism, which is vital for local communities. The discussions emphasized innovative solutions, including the validation of a new assessment tool—the Conservation and Human Use Index (CHUI)—designed to help decision-makers understand the boundaries of acceptable development and to mitigate conflicts between economic interests and environmental conservation. This tool is at the forefront of European debates on sustainable tourism and biodiversity protection.
As part of the case study presentations, Ana Filipović, representing the Chamber of Economy of Montenegro, shared insights from the study titled “The Impact of the Cruise Industry in the Bay of Kotor”. This research critically analyzes the ecological and economic effects of the rapidly expanding cruise tourism in the region. While acknowledging the significant economic benefits brought by cruise and nautical tourism, the study also highlights the increasing pressures on local infrastructure, marine ecosystems, and the quality of life of residents.
Preliminary findings from the research, conducted in collaboration with industry representatives and academic partners, underline the importance of sustainable management practices to ensure the long-term viability of the Bay of Kotor as a premier tourist destination".

🌊 University of Salento brings PRO‑Coast science to future marine biologists
On 8 May 2026, the University of Salento team presented key outcomes of the PRO‑Coast project to students of the International Master’s Degree in Coastal and Marine Biology and Ecology (course: Ecological Indicators and Biomonitoring).

👨‍🏫 Presenters:
Prof. Maurizio Pinna, Prof. Valeria Specchia, Dr. Francesco Zangaro, Dr. Francesca Marcucci

📘 What they shared:
The Conservation and Human Use Index (CHUI) – a practical, multi‑parameter assessment tool designed to identify and track conflicts and synergies in conservation area management.🌍 Why it matters:
The CHUI has been applied to ten representative European coastal environments. It translates EU‑wide environmental policies into local, place‑based knowledge, helping conservation managers visualise data‑driven trade‑offs between strict ecological protection and local socio‑economic demands.

🧠 Who developed it?
The CHUI was developed and elaborated by Phobe Vayanou, Panagiotis Georgiou, and Constantinos Kounnamas of Frederick University in Cyprus – a fantastic example of cross‑institutional collaboration.📄 Scientific recognition:
The work has been submitted as a paper in Frontiers in Environmental Science, titled:
“First Assessment of the Coastal Social‑Ecological Conditions using the Conservation and Human Index (CHUI) across ten European case studies.”🎓 This dissemination activity shows how EU‑funded research directly enriches higher education and equips future marine biologists with tools for real‑world conservation challenges.

👏 A big thank you and congratulations to the entire University of Salento team – and to Frederick University – for their outstanding contribution to coastal science and capacity building.
