Oooof. Not telling the client, who was convicted of murder, that ChatGPT may have fucked his case, because he's a Spanish speaker (!?!) just ups this from a terrible, sanction-worthy event to one where I hope this guy is disbarred. Inexcusable.

For them, interjecting would be awkward, because even though they were friends of mine, and knew me, they didn't want to accuse a fellow guy of acting like an asshole. He said/she said, etc. Or they just didn't want to speak up when it was obvious, because that would mean 'getting involved'.

In my younger days, there were multiple times where my well-tuned 'this is not safe, and will probably escalate' alarm went off, and I left, rather than be assaulted. Sometimes, I'd even tell my male friends and colleagues exactly why. None of them ever asked, much less helped.

This will of course, continue to escalate until the US is basically Taliban-lite as far as women are concerned. This is what happens when we don't vote. Republicans win, and elect Supreme Court justices who roll back everyone's rights.

everyone is so focused on what natural-language-to-code can do for industry but I'm most excited about what it can do for normal ordinary people "make a bespoke tool to help me be more organized about my hobby" can take billions of individualized forms and I think that's beautiful

I remember when that happened for me. There is something intoxicating and powerful when you go from 'man, I wish I could get the computer to do x' to magicking up some code and making the computer do x. It's a transformational switch.

Fun times. Even America.gov knows that Biden won the 2020 election. Also, if you want a wild ride, tell it to play minecraft
After asking who won the 2020 presidential election according to Whitehouse.gov documents, the AI responded

I’ll look up official White House and related records on the 2020 presidential election result.

WhiteHouse.gov does not publish an official 2020 Electoral College results record like the National Archives.

Federal Electoral College records list Joseph R. Biden Jr. as the 2020 winner (306 electoral votes to 232).

National Archives: 2020 Electoral College Results
FEC: Official 2020 Presidential General Election Results (PDF)
Current WhiteHouse.gov pages discuss election integrity and related 2020 topics; they are not the certified vote tally. Archived Trump White House remarks from 2020 are statements, not the Electoral College count.

Had fun trying to get it to answer questions about how many immigrants ICE has murdered and how many six-year olds they detain in concentration camps. It wouldn't answer my questions about how many felonies Donald Trump was convicted of, or how many times he appeared in the Epstein files. Booo

Eh, hard to tell if this is Meta fuckery or a genuine degradation in iOS. Maybe a little of both?

I don't think there's any amount of advertising (subliminal or otherwise) that would allow the canonical example of a punchable face to run for office. Mark Zuckerberg is many things, but he is not likeable or charismatic and you need at least one of those things to run for office.

Yes. They've been fined repeatedly for over 10 years, but that doesn't change anything because a) Meta rarely pays fines, and b) fines are not a good mechanism to force behavioral change given a). What we need is Meta to not be in business anymore. Or Mark Zuckerberg in jail.

I'm sure Meta did the thing where the permissions were buried under a wall of other text, or otherwise not clear, and they're riding on the fact that people won't read and just allow all to everything.

I feel like every time I see the phrase 'stochastic parrot' in relation to LLMs, it's the equivalent of people saying 'like yelling fire in a crowded theater' or 'possession is 9/10ths of the law'. It's a lazy way to indicate that the speaker doesn't know, and doesn't really want to learn.

Unlike a human, Claude has access to and can quickly assess the existing state of the art/proofs/lemmas and other papers, and then just go to town testing all the potential theories until Lean (the verification language) compiles. That's how these theorems are resolved.

Meta is the Torment Nexus @priva.cat · 28/09/2026
The reason LLMs do better than a ML-based proof assistant, is that they're not just solving the math as such. The utility is that between the mathemetician end the model, they're also clarifying assumptions made by the author of the paper that are not always as self-evident as the author assumed.

My husband has been using Claude to derive Lean proofs of existing papers. The reason the stochastic parrot line is old and tired, is because it's not an accurate representation of what these models do. You can't parrot something that hasn't been done yet, and these types of proofs have not yet

I know we’re all tired of being on Zoom, but some important Zoom etiquette reminders:

- everyone wants to see your cat

- don’t just say “my cat is here,” hold your cat up to the camera so we can see it

- when your cat is on camera, either say “cat” or type “cat” in the chat

I really hope that they keep the worst one, and when the administration eventually changes, every single admin official, Trump, his kids, Stephen Miller, and all 22k ICE agents are sent there to serve out their sentences.

This (along with the iced-coffee discourse) makes me think of the opening chapter in @jmberger.com's Optimal, where the main character was in a heated debate with the online about two different brands of watch. And how the whole debate was designed to keep people distracted.

less anxious (and, as a result, more well-behaved on average). I think about my brother's and my friend's kids, almost entirely isolated, glued to screens indoors, with activites mediated by schedules, cars, and streets that are too busy to play on, and neighbors too unfamiliar to interact with.

I often wonder what it would have been like to be a kid growing up here. I'm sure it's not roses and puppies for everyone, but the kids that I've met do genuinely seem happier. They have autonomy, without being thrust into it by necessity. Parents seem hands-off by design. And it makes the kids

Entrepreneurism feels like a normal part of childhood, in a way that it never really did anywhere else we've lived. It's transactional, but it's also unbelievably wholesome. I suspect the bold little girl and her friends will be back, and I'll need to find new chores for them. Any ideas?

But the trio of kids here is not unusual. We've had many interactions like this. A boy of eleven came over in July. For 100 EUR, he took care of pavers out in our front, and did an amazing, professional job. There are kids selling eggs, or kids doing charity collection.
